A couple or three random observations:

The signed American flag looks to be a full-sized no-kidding flag draped in the American corner, with signatures displayed. Though I’m positive no disrespect is intended, any screen shot of this to any one of several dozen organizations and a shee-at storm would rain down on them. Someone should advise them to take it down.

If any one of you has not had at least one passing fantasy involving Michaela, her white gloves, and Scottish lilt... you are not human.

It appears that Captain Wiley is wearing a jacket covering his team shirt. I don’t care how cold it might be there -- for a team captain to be doing that looks bad.

Some bad technical calls from the booth on what the player is intending, like late calls on a jump shot (when the guy is holding a jump cue the whole time), imagining and calling angles that are not playable, and calling some shots tougher than they are. I also think their characterization of the SVB match was grossly unfair. Yes he missed a ball, but other than that it was just the way the balls rolled out. SHs.

I don’t in any way fault the play of Dechaine or Shuff -- they are playing marvelously. The problem is that under the glare of the MC lights, anything less than absolute perfection is all too easy to take to task. That is unfair.

My hat is off to MR for engineering the teams this year. The future of the game is with the younger players and not the war horses, or perhaps a smart combination of the two. I also think it actually works to to have the younger players introduce some degree of humanity and imperfection to the competition, along with some stellar play. Robots sinking shot after shot makes for boring TV. What these up and coming stars illustrate is just how hard the game is -- and that even the rising stars struggle with some of the plays. I mean, who amongst us cannot find something to identify with when these younger guys (and occasionally the veterans) blow position or what appears to be a highly make-able shot?

Someday you will have to explain to me how you get inside my head and say what I am thinking better than I could.

The jacket thing tilts the hell out of me.

That ****ing jacket can only be referred to as that ****ing jacket.

As for Michaela...I think she's Irish and I'll admit it...I'd put pipe where pipe goes.

Is she married, becuase I think Hatch was flirting with her & I think Deshaine was distracted.

She is Scottish and is married to Ross Mcinness, ex pro english pool player.

Well, I can't exactly explain all the mechanics involved... but while I'm up here, um, would you mind me borrowing some of the Bettie Page stuff?

She's ridiculously hot in "the hot librarian" sort of way......

I have always had a thing for the hot librarian type.

You're right, most people have no idea how tough this game is. Then, to be representing your Country, with all the lights and camera's, knowing that if you make any mistake at all, it's heading to youtube, so everyone and his brother can criticize you....... As for the young guns, and older players mixed, I think thats the correct route. Familiar faces, and experience, to help introduce the guys who are coming up.

Nice post Lou.

One thing that continues to jump out at me is how not young our young "stars" are.

SVB = 29
Shuff = 29
Dechaine = 25 (I think)

I think this fact alone speaks volumes about pool in the U.S.

Compare this to how young the past greats were when they began playing top notch pool.

This is nothing against them, as they are all great players in their own right. I just think it's interesting how much longer it is taking guys to play at the top level. This may have something to do with the international competition really raising the bar. So it just takes longer to get there? I don't know.

I do know that Darren Appleton is an absolutely beast. He's at the top of my list of players that are to be emulated.

+1 on Michaela
The captain for Europe was wearing a jacket as well.
As for Dechaine, I feel he is an easily butt hurt narcissist.

I think we get spoiled always watching the very best players on TAR and Accu-Stats. Normal pool -- even great normal pool -- is not perfect. Good to great players miss shots and blow position, even on the hangers. People's expectations are far too high. Nowadays, you don't play perfect, and you're a bum.

I think "the bar" on professional level pool has moved up several notches the last decade or two. Starting with the Filipinos and now many of the other Asian and European players, the standard of play seems higher now. There is also, IMO, more dedication and work ethic when it comes to practicing the game amongst non-American players. Our guys nowadays seem like they'd all rather be playing a round of golf, or doing something else, rather than practicing their craft. And that shows up on the clutch shots.

I'm impressed that Team Europe all uses the same barber.

When I was watching the European captain was not wearing a jacket. In any case, I don't care about him -- I don't like seeing *our guy* covering up his team colors. It almost looks like he doesn't want anyone in the crowd to know he's with the band or maybe he just wants to be ready for a quick getaway. I'm not saying that's what's actually going on, just that it looks bad.

I've been to Britain a few times, Lou.
Room temperature there is a lot colder than this continent.
That's why many Brits drink their beer at room temperature..it's cold.

A jacket with the team colors would have been wise.

CJ said it is super cold there, so let's not jump on him too much. As someone who hates being cold, I can relate.

Sure we'd all like to see the team colors but if you're freezing your ass off, I understand, and it doesnt effect the outcome or the job he is there to do.

That would be an acceptable excuse, but we haven't seen the back of that jacket yet. If it has any kind of "The Game is the Teacher" or CJ advertisement on the back of it (instead of Mosconi Cup or Team USA), that excuse would be blown out of the water big-time.
