Taking the heat...

Now this is getting a little too close for comfort. :(

Sweden's Marcus "The Little Napolean" Chamat just dodged the bullet against Tony "The Silent Assassin" Robles and scores another point for the Blue Team, making the score 10 to 8.

Who is going to save the day for the Red Team?! I hope Captain Archer steadies the course.

Standing by, awaiting word from the battlefield in The Netherlands. Team USA needs to win this next point to avoid a bloody war. Hail to the Red Team! Bring out the secret weapon. Now is the time for all good pool players to come to the aid of their country. :p

Rodney Morris won a nice tournament over there in Poland, I think. I am not as familiar with the European tours, but Rodney did compete there and got himself a championship title for his endeavors! Rodney is on a roll! :)

The tournament Rodney won was not part of the Eurotour.

Wouldn't it seem prudent, then, for Barry Behrman to restrict the U.S. Open to citizens of the United States? We all know that ain't going to happen. :p

I'm not sure if you understood me quite right.

The U.S. Open is an OPEN kind of tournament. Of course it should be open to everyone. It's not a national championship for the United States.

What I'm saying is that the national championchips, like our NM (Norwegian championship), will naturally be restricted to citizens. The point being to determine the best player in the country. I feel that all other tournaments and tours should be open to everyone wanting to play. Qualifying requirements are okay of course, as long as they're based on skill.

If a tournament is restricted to citizenship, by all means, the winner is the BEST in that country.

The U.S. Open, by its very name, is the UNITED STATES OPEN. Maybe it should be called the INTERNATIONAL MALE OPEN, since its doors are open to male pool players of all ethnicities.

The BCA Open, by its very name, is the Billiard Congress of America Open. Half of its field of 64 players is reserved for foreign players from different countries; the other half, UPA-ranked players.

Truth be told, I cannot think of one American tournament which is restricted to American citizens.

And THEN there were TWO...

America's Up-and-Coming Boy Wonder Gabe Owen takes Team USA to the Hill, Earl stumbles, and at the time of this writing, Charlie "The Korean Dragon" Williams must be a nervous wreck.

Here we go, folks. This is it! Come on, Charlie. Let's bring this to a close! USA, all the way. USA, ALL the way. USA, ALL THE WAY, Baby!

Suspense is frightful...

Cutshot, this is brutally suspenseful: Charlie Williams against Steve Davis.

Oh, Charlie Boy, the fans, the fans are calling.
From coast to coast, we stand by you this day.
The time has come, the Blue Team motor's idling.
'Tis you, 'tis you and Red Team USA.

Come on, Charlie. This is the moment. Snatch this victory from the Blue Team and bring the Mosconi Cup where it rightfully belongs, right here in good old US of A!

Charlie is a seasoned globe-trotting tournament player and should perform well under the pressure. A race to five, though, it's a crapshoot. Steve Davis must have the whole place pulling for him. This is a toughie!

Charlie won 5-2 over Davis, USA win the Mosconi 12-9.

Steve played an absolutely awful game.

He should never of been in the team to be honest, the World Number 1 should of been there without any doubt, gone are the days when Sky Sports needs a UK figure, now it should be the very best players in Europe.

As a child of the disco era, I love KC and the Sunshine Band, so thanks for the nostalgia.

Look forward to the recap on the Mosconi website, which has reported a 12 - 9 win by the US side.

Souquet and Hohmann watch while Davis participates. Jeremy Jones and Corey Deuel watch while Strickland participates. Neither side put up its strongest possible team. Still, the inclusion of both Earl and Steve was probably close to a competitive wash, and, let's face it, their participation over the years has really has had a lt to do with making the Mosconi Cup a great event.

Time to choose these teams on merit only, just like you have suggested. Finally, whoever decided that Gabe Owen, the US Open champion, belonged on the US Mosconi Cup team, is looking very smart right now!

In a race-to-5 format, it's a toss-up with these caliber of players. It is the collaborative team effort, though, that wins the Mosconi Cup.

Each of the American players -- Captain Johnny Archer and the whole team, Boy Wonder Gabe Owen, New York's Finest Tony Robles, the colorful Earl "The Pearl" Strickland, Rockin' Rodney Morris, and Charlie "Korean Dragon" Williams -- gave it their all, as did Team Euro, and at the end of the day, Team USA maintains their title as the 2004 Mosconi Cup champions!

Hip, hip, horray! Hip, hip, HORRAY! HIP, HIP, HORRAY!

[Standing ovation and a huge round of applause.]

Click above the White House and see JAM celebrating in Washington, D.C.

Would a 10-gun salute be overkill? :p

Congratulations to Johnny and the rest of the American players for their great victory. Last year Charlie didn't win a single match but this year he hit the winning nine ball, talk about redeeming yourself! This years winless player was Thomas Engert :(

i think that sometimes one cannot deduce what a tournament is all about by its name, like the all japan championship. . . seems only for japanese but there are all sorts of peoples there.

indeed america is open even to non americans to the benefit of many including our filipino players. as touching the national championships, i don't mind each country having one that's limited to its citizens even each continent having one limited to those who belong in it. i think there just should be more open events.

obviously i am not aware of the ins and outs of san miguel asian 9 ball tour. i am surprised to know that it is open to everybody. about viewership, in manila leg i guess almost everyone is marketable. somehow i'm glad to see only asian players there because i see very scanty pool action from them. i only get to hear of the myth about the asian countries' good players but barely know how good they really are.

there are only a handful of international pool events in RP. ave of 4 in a year. so far only the asian 9 ball tour has been with asians only. the rest have been participated by americans, asians and europeans but only 1 of them is an open and the rest are invitationals.

going back to mosconi, congratulations to USA!!!

cheers :)

What is "RP," Countess Dracula?

The way I look at it, I wish the Asian-Pacific Islanders well competing on their tours. By them being over there, it enhances my chances of seeing my horse in the winner's circle here in the States! :D

It is interesting that the lovely Japanese player, Miyuki Sakai, seeks opportunities to compete here in the States. The women's pool in the Asian countries must not provide as many tournaments to the lady champions as in the U.S. and Canada. Their loss is our gain, and the recent Korean player who won the big WPBA event is a good example of the diversity in American pool.

Team USA being the Mosconi Cup winners speaks well about our status on an international scale (IMO). Man, it sure was thrilling to see it unfold. :)

I think RP stands for Repulic of Philippines.

Damn... let's not talk about Mosconi cup anymore, okay !? :D USA took the title but Europe will whoop Americans next year at least 12-0 ! Easily ! For sure! Without a doubt ! :p

We are just holding back our strongest players.. that's the reason... yeah, gotta be ! Or USA has some sort of secret subliminal device... I guess that's it... has to be ! :)
