Mosconi Cup

I am a very proud american, but I would like to offer my congratulaions to the European team and their victory in this event. It was a very good Mosconi cup, and I do have to agree with Archer and Hatch that the European team did figure out the break. This hurt our team big time. Especially Corey, he had a lot of trouble with his break, and it seemed like they had a shot most of the time. I am just glad I was able to watch some of the greatest players in the world for the last few days, and I am sad that it is over. I would love to see a USA vs Asia event sometime! That would be awesome too. IMHO.

For a guy that everyone seems to think is some genius with the break I think it is his achilles heel. He is a phenomenal safety player, amazing at kicks, has a huge stroke to pull out when he needs it, and pots balls extremely well when he is on. Every time I watch him lose it is his break normally that kills him.

If someone tracked the last few Mosconi Cups it would not surprise me at all if Corey has been the player that has the worst ratio for giving up control of the table off their own break.

A few numbers:

US Players' Records. [Note: For doubles and team matches, everyone involved is credited with a win or a loss.]
  • Archer 3-4
  • Deuel 2-4
  • Hatch 3-3 (the only US player without a losing record)
  • Morris 1-5
  • Van Boening 2-4

Europe Players' Records.
  • Appleton 5-1
  • Boyes 5-1
  • Immonen 4-2
  • Souquet 4-3
  • Van Den Berg 2-4 (the only Europe player without a winning record)

Overall record in games: US 78 - Europe 95

Number of hill/hill matches: 9 of the 19

Number of matches decided by at least 3 games: 7 of the 19

Celtic, I have to totally agree with you. People thought he was a genius with his break because he used to know exactly how the racks were playing. He knew how hard and how soft to hit the rack to get a ball to drop, and be able to get a shot afterwards. He is a phenomenal player, and does have one of the best strokes out there. But I think it hurt him too that they were racking 9 ball on the spot instead of the 1 ball. I think that hurt the US team bad. And give credit to the European for being able to figure out how to crack the puzzle of the break. They did a great job with that. I was just happy to be able to watch all this talent in one place, and seeing some amazing matches. I was hoping it would go hill hill, but it didn't. Oh well, there is always next year!

Rep to you for expressing what I'm sure many of us feel. I'm sorry the U.S. team didn't win, but I really enjoyed the suspense, competitiveness, and high level of play of this year's event. I'm also very grateful for the companies that streamed this event so that we poor Americans could enjoy this in spite of the fact that mainstream media ignored it. I watched almost all of it and felt that every minute was well spent.

European fans have NO class!

The way team USA was treated while they were at the table was total BS! Last year in Vegas the US fans were very respectful of the European players while they were shooting. The refs had to keep warning and resetting the clock for team USA because the fans in York Hall were acting like fools and trying to shark and distract team USA. Then Darren "kick shot fluker king" Appleton. Thanks the crowd when it was over! WOW really. Team Europe should be ashamed of their fans. The fans made a diffrence in some of team USA loses. IMO Earl should be brought back next year and Dennis and Rodney should be hitting the road. Dennis choke shot against Appleton on day 3 was huge and changed the momentum in europes favor. The fans also played a hand in that miss twice Tabb had to reset the clock. Again I can't get over the classless fans of Europe. I didn't know what people meant by Euro Trash before. Now I do! Next year in Vegas I hope our fans return the favor to team Europe. I know i'll be there with 20 of my good friends and their will be some pay back coming!

Until you are out there and you have to fade that pressure keep your uneducated opinions to yourself. It's a lot tougher out there than you think it is so don't sit on your couch, watch us on your computer and bash all of us. It's not fair. Sometimes we play bad and sometimes we play good. When we play good we're hero's and when we play bad we're bums.

Shooter: Ever considered taking up chess? :p

Hatch: I loved watching the event. Can't win 'em all though.

Welcome to being a professional sports figure.

When you get to your level in any sport this is simply the way it is. Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Sydney Crosby, all professional sports figures deal with that on a regular basis.

Your a clueless and ignorant twat. Simply right click on his name, go to "find all posts by Hatchetman71", read them, and realize how wrong you are.

Yes. 12pm (midnight) when he posted that and I wouldn't be surprised if the players are so wired tonight that they don't get to sleep until the wee hours.

Dennis - I am English and while I am very happy that the European team won, I want to let you know how much respect the public on both sides of the pond now has for you. In the UK, we love to see people play for their country with emotion and with their heart on their sleeve. You certainly proved to the world how much you care about your country and we love that.

Win or lose on the table, you are a winner in life for getting to showcase your skills on the biggest stage. Your 3-3 record on a losing team speaks for itself.

Good luck next year. I am sure your desire and appetite will be tough for the Euro's to fade on your home patch.

Elliot

It's only midnight in the UK. (I should know, I lived there for 24 years.)
Do you think Dennis would be fast asleep by then?
Or maybe you assume that he can't use a computer, as he is only four inches tall?
These people are real people, you know.

To change subject entirely, how about ten ball for next year? (Bet that gets ignored)
Just for fun (and Corey) why not play some snooker?

Thanks to both sides for an exciting Cup once again! Win or lose I enjoyed every minute of it.

First off I'll say I'm not a big fan of Dennis', but what he say's here is right on. Pointing fingers is plain stupid. I personally think that the format of such short races for a tournament of this prestige really sucks! I think that races to 11 would be doable with the time constraints and would be a much better contest of the players. This format makes the home field advantage twice as strong IMHO Maybe that's the grand scheme of things! As far the showing of the Americans this year, frankly only Archer seemed to be solid from the matches I watched, and I'll admit that I didn't see them all. We got a few good rolls but more bad than good and we definitely took the worse of it when it came to jump shots.

The European team earned their win through consistency. The pressure of the short races in an unwelcome environment took their toll on the American team this year and no doubt, the Europeans figured out the break and was by far more consistent in that respect this year. Again, the short races made that even more pronounced. It put much more pressure on the Americans as a result. We also lost many big leads due to minor errors or bad breaks and took the worse of so many hill-hill matches. No sense crying over spilled milk! Better luck next year and hopefully a better format that is a better test of the players abilities instead of a test of breaking and jumping consistency. JMHO
