Mosconi cup

99% of the fans don’t really understand pocket specs, relatively speaking. Just saying they are tight pockets or they are 4 inch pockets which are 1 inch tighter than a standard 5 inch corner pocket is all they need to know.
4" or 4 1/4"? imo 4" takes away the flow of the game...this is going to start looking like chinese 8 ball if they keep going. They must be shallow shelves because I have seen shots drop that would never drop on my table.

There is a stone cold champion under all that aging crazy. If it came down to it I wouldn't put it past Earl to win. I would fly right out of my chair!

I've felt bad for Earl. Watching him play is like watching a 90 year old try to drive through downtown traffic during rush hour. His confidence is totally shot. Hopefully he ends on a high note.

here is a list of the top 15 usa players from fargorate googled today

Uh-The deeper the shelves, the less likely to drop. Not to mention, you are contradicting yourself when you say "is going to start looking like chinese 8 ball if they keep going" if these DEEP shelves are so soft.

Keep going? You think they might stop or change the pockets for the final day-Ahahaha. Your knowledge is so vast.

The part of this whole scenario that I'm not sure anyone thought through is what happens to Earl if he totally comes off the rails here? I know he's done it before, but doing it one last time on this most ultimate stage could be devastating. Hopefully for his sake, he can get through this.
Do you think Matchroom cares about Earl’s well being? They only care about ratings and drama.

I like the lineup. We have no choice but to come out with our top players early to give us our best chance to stay alive. No, having Earl in the deciding match is not ideal, but most likely Earl’s match won’t even matter. Playing Earl in an earlier match (if he continues to struggle with his game) would result in giving us even less chance to make it to the final match.

I can only assume that Earl has been scheduled to play the number of matches that he has played up to this point because every player on both teams must play a minimum number of matches. If he has played even one match more that he had to have played, then yes, that is an obvious error on JJ’s part.
I’ll be surprised if Earl’s singles match needs to be played. To do that the USA will need to win at least three of the previous five matches. That looks like a tall order to me.

One match at a time, but yes, realistically for us to have a shot at winning, we need to win the opening fan’s choice doubles match as well as Sky and Shane both winning.

Observation: Comments and discussion is up to 46 "pages" at this point. Remove all comments relating to Earl and it would be up to 6 "pages" ....maybe. In the marketing world his presence equals value. Earl has been a great champion and is still a great player at 61 years. Can't think of another champion of his era that plays better and probably not as good. At this point comments about Earl's contributions to the team, or lack thereof, is pointless. It's a team effort so we must pull for our team and all the players on it.....at least until it's over.

... I was pleasantly surprised to read that Sky and Shane defeated Joshua and Jayson 5-zip. Woo-hoo! This thread doesn't seem to say much about that. Can anybody share what happened, the good, the bad, and the oh-so-ugly? ...
All 5 breaks were dry -- a total of zero balls were made on the break in this match.

Game 1. Shane's break left the 9-ball hanging in the jaws of a side pocket. Joshua missed a thin but not really difficult cut on the 1-ball. Sky made the 9 with a carom/kick off the 1-ball.

Game 2. After some back and forth, including a missed kick by Sky and a missed 1/9 bank by Joshua, Shane made a nice safety on the 2-ball. Joshua missed the kick and USA made a great runout from the 2-ball.

Game 3. Sky fouled on a kick, but Jayson missed an easy 3/5/4 combo and USA ran out.

Game 4. Some back and forth led to Jayson trying to hit the 1-ball on a kick then carom the 9-ball into the side pocket on the other side of the table. He missed the shot. USA made the 1 and 2 and played safe on the 3. Joshua's kick hit the 3 but left it easy and USA ran out.

Game 5. After the dry break, Joshua missed the 3 ball and USA ran out.

5 missed shots by EUR, none by USA. An unusually poor match for Filler.

combined with the official nineball rankings it kind of mutes a lot of the alternate picks. bergman, dechaine are out of discussion. i would say tony chohan (one of my favorite players) is too, by not entering the US open or the international open, showing he has zero interest in being eligible. pinegar i guess falls in the dechaine category where team chemistry would deteriorate rapidly. billy idk the full story and don't care for rumors. so in that fargo span that leaves josh roberts, another player i like a lot. he would have been a rookie though.

i've been pleasantly surprised by earl's behavior. his play, not so much. didn't expect him being so nervous. he gets down on himself too much and the occasion seems to get to him. but he has got a W, against a europe team packed with young world champions.

i think and hope that JJ, if he gets to stay captain, will pick a young rookie next year. it worked with tyler and sky.

I don't approve of all of Earl's antics over the years. He's been quite embarrassing at times. Along this long ride, many fans have been guilty of justifying his behavior one way or another. But...like a struggling relative who's always trying to overcome their shortcomings but just can't quite get there - I root for him. I'm not sure what it is exactly, maybe it's just his continual pursuit of the impossibly perfect game. Constantly reaching out for something that is just barely beyond his reach. I think that alone is worthy of respect at least to some degree.

The part of this whole scenario that I'm not sure anyone thought through is what happens to Earl if he totally comes off the rails here? I know he's done it before, but doing it one last time on this most ultimate stage could be devastating. Hopefully for his sake, he can get through this.
So far, he has actually maintained his composure.

He has gotten down on himself for sure, but he hasn't started yelling at the crowd or his opponents.

Let's hope that keeps up.

He hasn't totally fallen apart either at the table- he made a very tough shot after missing an easy pot in the deciding game of the doubles match yesterday and made a difficult jacked up shot that Sky left him.

Against Albin, he didn't play terrible- he misplayed position and missed a difficult corner shot and then scratched on the break twice.

It's not like he's missing every ball he shoots at

That may all be true but he isn`t getting it done. I do not mean to pick on him.

Here's a very eye-opening conversation between Billiards Digest publisher Mike Panozzo and Matchroom founder and president Barry Hearn about the future of pool.

I get what he is saying, but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the differences amongst 8, 9, and 10 ball. I don't think it is the variety of games that is holding pool back
