Mosconi Idol Pick Is A Joke On The US

What a joke this USA Idol pick is. Why doesn't Team Europe get picked that way? Because they want the best on their team, that's why.

They have voting on their web site that anyone in the world can vote to put anyone of the 8 picks on the USA Team and can vote as many times as they want I might add…hello…it's the US Team…get it?

Add to this everyone and their brother swinging from the nuts of, and promoting their favorite player regardless if he's the best pick not.

This was my top tournament to watch every year, now it's dropped way down on my list like watching Sat Night Live…which I never watch. Johnnyt

To us hardcore fans I would agree

But casting a wide net of interest is not bad idea for making the match more popular.

I agree.

I said the same thing in one of the other 200 threads on this.

I think that part of the reason is simply because American pool is so totally screwed up that they do not have an easy way to pick five players that isn't just arbitrary. Also I think it's partly Matchroom's way of screwing with the US fans and team to stir up controversy and generate buzz about the match.

I do honestly think that they should have done the same to the Euro team if they are going to do it.

Or done it to neither as it's really sad to see these players begging for a spot and trying to one-up each other on who is best.

People need to realize that the whole match is just a made for TV reality show that can swing either way. It's races to five which is truly like flipping a coin amongst ANY of these guys.

I have beaten several top pros in races to five and I am way far away from from pro level.

It's a joke alright.

That's the TRUTH as well. As a marketing gimmick it's brilliant. You have these guys out on Facebook and doing mass emails and wherever they can be trolling for votes. If only they had done the same thing for the IPT we might be seeing some true high level pool in long race formats.

yea, it's a pretty strange way to pick the last player. At first I thought it was a good idea, but then it got a little ugly. The Euro team I guess has a point system in place to pick their players?....and I understand that we don't, but to pick our last guy this way and not theirs feels a little like being the fat kid on the ball field and getting picked last! :D

yes, I used to be the fat kid!

I always thought there should be a play off, Maybe a ring game between the finalists. Make it a $1000 a man with the winner getting expenses paid with the Mosconi seat. Second would get the rest of the prize fund. I think it keeps the placement of the team member honest, we get to sweat some more pool action, and there can be no more talk of vote swinging or campaigning. I'm no expert on the matter but, and I am sure I don't know what exactly what goes into the team member selection every year. I just thought I would add my two cents.

Your two cents on your second post was well spent (IMO). I agree that there should be some form of play off between the top finalists.

I understand the marketing strategy behind the vote but from the viewpoint of a fan, there are more cons than pros to the idea. The choices are reputable, deserving choices but the vote itself is a farce. A week ago it didn't look like Rodney could be touched and then miraculously the person getting mentioned the most on this forum that apparently had no chance is all of the sudden in the lead.

The Mosconi Cup is a fun competition and it puts money in the players pockets but it has definitely lost some of its prestige, in my eyes.

They really should have made it a poll about who do you NOT want on the team this year with the person with the least votes winning. That way you can't really campaign for yourself directly.

Imagine an email from Dragon Promotions that says "go to this site and vote, but don't vote Charlie Williams." That might help increase his competition's votes, but it won't directly help him, especially because the better guys still won't get votes from those people, they will most likely pick the 2nd least popular person to be "voted off the island".

Mike Mertins...You may only have two posts, but this one is right on the mark, imo. The whole voting thing smacks of "American Idol" BS...not the best, and most talented win. The ring game idea is a winner!

Do u know how Steve Reeves won the Mr.Universe title in 1948?
Judges were unable to seperate the final two remaining contestants and could not decide whom to make Mr.Universe-Steve and the other guy whose name I don`t remember. Those two remaining guys were put on a flat bed truck and paraded them around the city. The decision was left to the public in the street who did not have any clue about body building.

Too bad pool in the US wasn't as organized as say the PGA where the top players earned points ala the Ryder cup selection. And I "think" one or two captains choices (been a while since I really followed it).

I have two people that I'd like to see on this team for a variety of reasons. I voted 1 time for each. But I do agree there should be a better method of doing this.

But, I do like the exposure it brings to the event.

My 2 cents anyhow.

Mosconi cup

This is Barry Hearn's toy. I seriously doubt he gives two sh!!ts as to who wins, as long as it makes him money, and it most certainly does. Everybody should remember when Charlie tried to keep earl off the team and was set straight in a heart beat by Mr. Hearn. He's got the puppet stings and you guys can all relax.

Popular vote doesn't always mean best choice. This is a team event and I think the people most qualified to make the choice are the players.

It dont matter your right.....I dont want to say i'm a hatch fan, but they definitely got the best player by leaps in this..........He's without a doubt got by far the highest gear and will to win out of the mentioned.........If you have been around pool at all and no pool without the tourney made for tv drama bs, then you know the right guy was chosen.......If you think not, I would grant you he would be willing to play any and all of them that you wanted to stake

Its not over yet and there is no guarantee that Hatch is going to be on the team. FWIW, all the guys on the list are capable of helping the team win. One person alone isn't going to do it and the way the format is, a strong gamblers "gear" isn't really going to come into play.

it's not who you know

this game is not democratic - team spots should be earned - this also supports the game through out the season as earned points have value - However i like the interest this voting has generated - perhaps BOTH team captains could be chosen like this Every year

Team captains need to have the respect of the players that are going to be playing on the team...not the fans. The captains should be picked last. Johnnyt

i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it wasn't hearn counting the votes
