Does anyone know why the United States (1 country pop. 300,000,000) matches up with the entire CONTINENT of Europe, which consists of 50 countries and 750,000,000 people? Doesn't seem like an even playing field to me.

Seems like the US has decent enough odds based on results. The US has an 11-5 record against Europe since the first Mosconi Cup.

With that kind of record, and the circumstances previously mentioned, makes you wonder why people consider the level of American play to be subpar compared to the rest of the world.

Should the US and Europe combine and play India? Or Africa? Would that make it fair?

It's a five man team. It's like calculating your odds of winning the lottery by buying two tickets instead of one. They won't change the outcome even though they're double.

So 5A football team has no advantage over 3A football team. Just more than double the school size.

You are absolutely right - it is very unfair, in favor of the USA.

The idea/format might have been ...ahem, 'borrowed' from the Brits
much as the Snooker event "England vs the Rest of the World".

A more pertinient question might be why would the Mosconi Cup
be 9 Ball when he HATED 9 Ball?

Football yes, basketball not so much. The 3A roundballers with the best coaching and developmental programs in the lower grades can usually play up with the big schools.

Five man team.

Here in Oregon we have a public school that's 5a (6a is the biggest) who has beaten the Washington state championship 6A with double the enrollment team two years in a row. It happens in football too.

Not sure I understand your first point, but I'm willing to read if you could elaborate a little more. As for the second more pertinent question, well thats easy. In General, spectators of this era would prefer to watch 9B over straight pool. Basically, the game is nine ball to generate more interest from spectators. I know its the MOSCONI cup, but seriously money talks, and nine ball is where its at (comparatively speaking that is).

I think your referring to specific programs rather then the general. I can partially agree. Where I'm from, there is a 2A school that can compete with the 5A schools. It has a well known program and the best players flock to this school because of that. It is an exception rather than the rule. Besides that school, the best 2A school would be crushed by the weakest 5A school. Just works out to numbers. Best of 2500 vs best of 750. Like I said, there are special circumstances, but they are exactly that, special.

IMO It does seem like Europe has an advantage over the US. But if you we're to compare the US to only one country in Europe, for example Germany, the quality and quantity of players can't compete with the states.

Even though the Mosconi Cup is Europe vs the US it still provides awesome entertainment and competition, while putting on a very successful event.

apples to apples

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to compare the total number of people that 9ball in the US to the total number of people playing 9ball in Europe?

Care to guess which territory has more active players from which to select?

I agree it is a successful event that I personally enjoy. Furthermore, I'm not proposing that any changes be made. I was just pointing out what I thought was a little unfair advantage. But, hey if it was our idea in the first place, let it ride then.

Yes, i think you are right arctic. That would be more appropriate, but I couldn't guess the answer because I personally have no clue. If research has been done, could you give me the numbers of 9 ball players in Europe compared to the USA.

I don't know the answer. Perhaps someone on the board does.

My gut, however, tells me the US has significantly more active 9 ball players.

The tiny Philippines would beat EITHER team...is THAT a fair fight???

speculation, but it is very possible. Furthermore, I believe what arctic said applies here. Children are taught to play in school in the philippines. How large do you think their 9b playing population is(every last one of them). Plus not exactly tiny at 100,000,000 but comparatively speaking you are right.

Pool is not part of the curriculum in the Philippines. That is false.

In England it's not even called 9-ball, it's called "American pool." Yet Darren Appleton and Chris Melling, to name two, play it reasonably well ;)

Who knows? The Brits also produced the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, to also name two, and yet they have a population of 50 million to our 300 million. I don't think the population density has much to do with anything.
