I went to my local addiction center/ pool hall yesterday to get in some much needed practice. Since my therapist agreed that pool wasn't bad for my back injury, I've definitely stepped up my game and can say I'm pleased with the level of results. I'd love to say I'm a AA player, and while my physical injury may limit that chance, I'd like to say that MENTALLY...I'm there. Remember; "Those who can't play, teach".
QUESTION:
So here's the common question; "Why am I missing?". I get asked that almost every time I'm anywhere where I can see other people playing pool. Initially I figured it was kind of a "Dang, I missed and need to save face, perhaps I should make a comment about how I'm trying to fix it.". But now, it seems like more and more people ask me, and really do expect answers. I'm flattered that I've gained a strong enough reputation to have people say "You're MilwShooter? Really nice to finally meet you." or "I've read your posts, you make them easy to read". etc. But why do people constantly fall back to this question of "What am I doing wrong?"?
ANSWER:
8 out of 10 times...you've got no consistency. That other 2 times, you're trying to show boat to your friends and when you realize the "regulars" are watching...you choke. The last 20 hours I spent at the pool hall I was asked by at least 5 different people "What am I doing wrong?". Here's what I suggest to everyone who reads this and wonders that question.
1. Pick a preshot and stick with it. Don't change the number of practice strokes based off of difficulty. And your post shot should include staying down until the balls stop, or until you are about to get in the way of the balls in play.
2. Don't use spin unless you know what you're doing. As cool as your friends think you are for drawing the ball 8 feet, you look like a tool to everyone else who saw how easy a simple center ball shot would've been.
3. PENDULUM....There are threads and threads about dropping your arm during your shot and when it's okay...If you don't know what I mean by "when it's okay", then it's not okay for you. Stick with practicing the robot dance a ton and get that elbow joint loose and limber.
4. If you keep these 3 things in mind, you're friends will think you look cooler than when you keep scratching and missing shots. I can draw and masse' all over....but rarely does anybody see it, and they still ask me, not you, "What am I doing wrong?"
These are just my opinions, Feel free to add your comments, and I'm sorry if this offends anybodies sensitive nature.
