MP Cup! PacMan International Tournament

I'm here now in Gensan. They had 120 players to start this event, an increase from 93 in the previous Pacman event. Of course the purse in the Singles has been boosted to 50K from 30K last time. They will play down to the final 32 today and then it becomes single elimination (Knockout stage). These guys all make the money but there is a big jump from 17th-32nd ($250) to 9th-16th ($1,000). First prize is $13,000 in the Singles and $40,000 in the Doubles.

I was there when Shane got called for not calling the Ten Ball (He won't make that mistake again!). He was pissed and quit the match with Ronnie. He would have trailed 6-3 and been in a bad state of mind, so maybe it was better for him to quit, and give himself a chance to cool down a little. He is playing soon and must win two matches to make the final 32 and everyone starts even again.

Shane went to the local action room last night (Gannis Billiards) and bet all he had in his pocket (40,000P, about $900) against Carlo Biado in a Race to 17 (Ten Ball). He trailed 13-9 when Carlo scratched during a run. Shane ran out for 13-10. He then kept Carlo in his chair for the next seven games, running out the match! Don't mess with Shane when he's mad!

P.S. This tournament brought all the Filipino hustlers out of the woodwork. The Philippines is not that small (over 100 million people here) and there must be several hundred pool hustlers at work in this country, much like the USA in the 60's and 70's. I've even seen a few guys that they snuck in on me in out of the way places. I never knew their names, just their faces. Let me tell you, all these young guys (and the older ones as well) can play this game. I see only a handful of overmatched players in the entire field. That's why you will see "name" players losing to unknowns. All these guys seem to know each other though, again similar to the the USA, where all the top hustlers know each other. Even a great young hustler like Anton, the 17 year old wunderkind from Cebu, got bounced out in two matches. What I notice is that these youngsters have virtually no fear of anyone. Even Shane will have to dig deep to make the final 32.

Jay -- Shane's last two opponents in the group stage would be Sean Mark Malayan and then Christian Gariando (if Shane wins the first one). Do you know anything about either of them?

Edit -- And I think the first match should have started about 40 min. ago.

I see Manny Pacquiao is on the stream right now. He lost his first match, got a bye in his second, and then defeated Ahmad Taufiq hill/hill yesterday.

Edit -- and Shane is playing on the first table to the left of the streaming table. But only half of the table can be seen.

Shane got ball in hand on a failed jump shot by Malayan, and Shane ran out. But I cannot tell what the score is.

Wonder kid Anton Raga is still in. He is currently playing Thorsten Hohmann in the loser's side.

Shane just walked out with his case over his shoulder. Since he won the last game played, he had to be the one who won the match.

So one more match to go to get him to the round of 32, and that match is scheduled to start in about 45 min.

Looks like the doubles event has started, or, no, probably an exhibition -- Reyes/Bustamante vs. Alcano/Pacquiao on the streaming table.

Shane is playing his match to get to the final 32 in singles, but it's on the 4th table down, to the right of the streaming table. His opponent just won a game, but I have no idea what the score is and it's difficult to make out anything about what is happening. I'm calling it a night.

Big upset of day - Thorsten knocked out in 1st round by wonderkid Anton Raga
Thorsten won the 1st edition if this event few months ago so this is big turnaround
Anton Raga is thru to last 32
Other 1st exits-recent All Japan champ Faraon is out. So is Jeff Ignacio, Gandy Valle

Efren wins 9-6 over Bustamante.
LOL. Django threw something when Efren was about to shoot the last ball. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWw_w5123t0&t=56m36s :grin-square:
It was the table brush. Efren was looking at Busty for about 10 seconds like, "Are you really going to make me shoot this straight in shot?" Busty obviously told him that he had to shoot the shot, but just as Efren took the shot Busty threw the table brush at the 10 ball.

Watched at few racks and they were both having fun. Buste was playing loose at end and made some nice runouts but was too far behind to catch up
With the big names like Thorsten, Shane, Orcullo not playing the old master Efren can go deep and may win whole thing
Go go Efren :)

Mika is out losing to Gallego
Looks like it will be all Filipino affair in the deep stages
Only non Filipino left I think are Morra, Rodney
