Hello Pool Players. As many of you are aware, the Midwest Poolplayers Association (MPA) is teaming up with Shooters Billiards in Burnsville, MN this weekend to host a $1,000 Added Singles 8-Ball Tournament. There are 3 divisions to play in, based on individual ability. Please feel free to check out the flier on the MPA website - http://www.mpapool.com - and hopefully the flier will answer any questions you might have.

The first MPA tournament was hosted at CR's Sports Bar in Coon Rapids, and this event brought in 87 players even though we just had a terrible snow storm the night before the event. The first MPA-sponsored casino event was held at Black Bear Casino, and 447 different players were in attendance for either singles or team (or both), receiving record payouts for their efforts. The outlook for the weekend looks like it'll be fairly decent traveling weather, and I've already had calls and inquiries from players who are over 100 miles away, telling me that they're planning on attending.

For those of you who are not familiar with the MPA, the Midwest Poolplayers Association is a Minnesota Non-Profit Corporation that was established to promote pool through tournament and league play throughout the Midwest. League players pay a $7 sanction fee to become members of the association, and individuals pay a $15 annual sanction fee to become non-league affiliated player members. 100% of the sanctioning money collected goes into the prize funds of MPA-sanctioned events. The MPA matches up to $500 from the host establishment's contribution into the added money purse, allowing larger Added money events to be more affordable to the host locations. The MPA's goal is to provide great added money tournaments to participating billiard establishments, with hopes to boost the economy of the local billiard industry.

I invite you all to come out on Saturday and check out this tournament. I believe that you will see that the MPA is striving to provide you - the players - with some great added money tournaments and also challenge your skills by matching you up against other players of similar abilities. Let's enjoy the sport we all love to play! I hope to see you there! Stay Positive Everyone - our sport needs that right now! John Stich

Stich, it's Frost good luck with your tourney I have a feeling your movement will be around a long time yet.

P.S. When you get back to Des Moines see if they will let you tune up some of the bar tables, you know Diamonds.

Can non-league members compete in the tournament?

RG

Yes. The MPA isn't a league. Basically, there is a yearly $15 sanctioning fee. There are some leagues that in the Midwest that pay a sanctioning fee to the MPA. Players who play in one of those leagues only pay a $7/year sanctioning fee (not sure which ones are sanctioned, but I believe ACS and Rum River are). M8 is not, but, if your entire team signs up for MPA sanctioning it's $7/person.

I'm just guessing on ACS and Rum River as Rum River does ads on their site and MPA and ACS are co-running a tournament later this year.

I really hope the MPA takes off. John Stich is putting a lot of time and effort into this non-profit to try to help give pool a much needed shot in the arm in the Midwest.

Thanks for the reply Brian.

How would someone with no league history (like myself) be classed? I see there are 3 divisions (Masters/AA, A, and B/C) and on their site it states
"All Players will be placed by player rank and known ability".

I to would like to see something like this take off. I tried league years ago and it just was not my cup of tea.

Thanks again,
Randy

Hey Brian - Good luck this weekend in the B/C Division. I know you're going to have some tough competition, as there will be some solid fields in all three divisions!!! I've gotten a ton of calls on this event, and there are people from over 100 miles away coming to take part in this weekend's tournament at Shooters in Burnsville. Tell your friends about it - players of all abilities will have a great opportunity to cash in on some nice prize funds.

Scott Frost - I was just talking about you the other day with some other players at Seco's tournament last weekend. We haven't seen you in Minnesota in a long time - what's up with that? Also, I know what you mean about the tables at Big Dogs needing some tweeking. I was down there last month and noticed a few rolls here and there. I think they have a good machinist level - they just need to take a few moments and re-level some of their tables. And a few rails might need to be given some attention also. You should check out my website - www.mpapool.com - and consider coming up for the March 17-20th MPA/MNACS Championships at Treasure Island Casino. It's a $25,000 Added event, so the prize funds are going to be HUGE! You can get MPA sanctioned by simply paying your sanction fee and becoming a player member if you're not playing in a pool league. Hope to see you around!

Randy - Players with no league history have to have some kind of history. We do some research and I can ask you a few questions, and if you answer them honestly, I am confident we can get you placed in a competitive division. Stop in on Saturday and we'll get you signed up and placed so we can get a history started on you. See you Saturday!

Oh, I know I'm going to need it! I'll probably be 2 and out which is my normal MO, but I'm trying to think positive! :)

And, now that we're back up to the top, MN/WI/SD/ND/IA players, show up! In addition to a great tournament you'll get to meet ME!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Which league did you play in? Also, if you're "known" by other players who are there, that will help in placing you as well.

The league was through C&N Sales here in Mankato 15+ years ago. My brother in-law should be up there and should be able to help (he plays league up there). I believe the name of his team is "Badd Company" or something like that.

Thanks for all the help gentlemen. I'll look you up if I can make it up there Saturday.

Sounds like John will make you a Master. Just kidding. I am planning on being there, so there will be a lot of free money in the building.;)

Had a great time. Played like #$%&, but had a great time. First tournament jitters got the best of me. Next time I'll play better (I promise :D).

You put on a class act John and hope your foot feels better soon.

Cheers,
RG
