just to give a little info before the question: i'm pretty young and a rather average player.

ok so i have one cue, a predator sp with the wood to wood joint, i like it so far but i think i'm still getting used to it. i dont want to spend money on more cues nor do i want to carry them with me when i go play so would you guys recommend breaking with my playing cue or a house cue? also i want to learn to jump, again would you recommend trying to do it with my player or a house cue? what do you do, or did you do before you had several specialized cues? thanks for the input

i had a mezz with a predator shaft for like 3 years. i broke with it or a house cue. i didn't jump ever just kicked. the other cues are a luxery. i wouldn't bother with them if you don't have the extra cash.use a shoft cut reak like duel with your playing cue or a house cue if you feel like smashin 'em

If I were you I wouldn't attempt any jumping with a house cue :) If you don't mind carrying around an extra cue, I think a J&J J/B cue might be good investment for you. They're inexpensive and work really well IMO. Here's a link... GOOD LUCK!

Also, I think chrisonline sells them from time to time for cheaper than the above. Might PM him and see if he has any.

I would never recommend breaking or jumping with your playing cue. Use the right tool for the right job.

Here are 2 videos from BCA Master Instructor Tom Simpson...

Tom Simpson - Jumping Part 1

Tom Simpson - Jumping Part 2

Tom Simpson is one of the best instructors out there and this is probably the best block of instruction I have ever seen on the subject.

Lmao

I think thats it but to read it the first time it sounds like they have pc's in the insane asylum.

i remember

back in 1918 i used one cue for playing, breaking and jumping! it had a marble tip that was just great as long as it never mushroomed on ya:D

I use my playing cue to break with all the time

Me too... every time I play one-pocket. Only kidding, Jake.

I used to be a one-cue man, but I have since acquired a taste for different tips for different jobs. I love the Sniper for playing, but I hate breaking with a layered tip (not to mention the fact that I can't jump a gnat-ball with a Sniper tip), so I keep a LePro on my Scruggs SP for breaking/jumping. For me, it's simply a tip thing.

Given that Predators are popular because of their low deflection jumping with one is very difficult although not impossible. One of my old friends has a base Predator and he jumps and breaks with it without a problem. I would recommend you look at a J&J J/B as a second cue. For under $100 it gives you a good breaker and a nice jump cue as well. If not, then I would say break with a house cue.

This is just my opinion, If you can't break with your playing cue then it isn't worth having. I break with mine every time I break. All in all it is basically what you are comfortable with.

Could it be, "a soft, cut break"?

IMO, cues are like cars having different types of models for different types of terrains or "needs". You have SUV's for the rough roads, you have the compact cars for the city roads, you have the sports cars for picking up chicks... :D

Same with cues, they have their very own functions & modifications. A break cue will have a stiffer-tapered shaft, a very hard tip, perhaps a bigger shaft diameter, and a lighter/heavier weight depending on your type of swing. A jump cue will need a stiff shaft and a very hard tip just like that of the break cue but it'll need a very light butt for easy jumping. And of course, the play cue which should be TUNED to your playing style.

If there are slick, winter, summer, & other different types of tires, your cue tips are also have specific functions. The break cue will need very hard leather tips for power & control (phenolics give power but are poor w/ control). The jump cue will need very hard leather tips but mostly phenolic tips for easy jumping. And you will be needing soft-medium-hard tips for your play cue for better control.

If you use your play cue as a break cue, you will be subjecting it to stresses that it isn't designed for: your tip will mushroom more often, especially if it's softer, and your shaft will be flexing more, therefore it may lose its straightness.

Jumping is not much of an issue as you rarely use this. You can jump using either a break, play, or a jump cue.

It's best to have your very own equipment for CONSISTENCY as you get to know how to make your arsenal do the desired results

It'll be great to have a main play cue since you will no longer have to "adjust" again unlike if you get another cue. If you get used to your main play cue, you'll be able to aim instinctively on your shots (your brain needs some time to learn how much your cue flexes in order for you to aim accurately) . You'll often hear stories of people having a hard time "adjusting" to their spare shafts right away because no 2 cues, or shafts for that matter, are ever the same. ;)

Of course you could break with it. The main reason not to is to keep you from shaping your tip every day...if you do break with your playing cue, I would say that you are breaking too weak! :D
