i have a porper now, but it sometimes catched the edge of the ferule. is there a better one that i can buy?

You need to adjust the top screw so the blade does not cut into the ferrule.

i did do that. but its hard to shave it evenly. to get good contact i usually angle the shaver a little which sometimes hits the ferule. i also tried adjusting the blades in as far as they go. i am not bad at it, i can usually get the job done right the first time but im wondering if there is a fool proof gadget out there that works better. anyone have one of those ultimate tip tools? worth the money?

These types of tools fit into two catagories; ones that cut the mushroom off and ones the press it back into shape. Neither is foolproof. Both have pros and cons. You may need to try out a couple to see which works best for you.

i have an alternate suggestion: switch to tips which don't mushroom. i use talisman tips and have never had one mushroom. they also last MUCH longer, making the extra $$ no issue.

I've got a Talisman medium and it is mushrooming like crazy right now....do you use hards or?

i say something went wrong when installing that tip or it was just a bad tip

i install talisman mediums on my playing shafts and while holding the shaft in one hand i hammer them with the other. it compresses the tip a bit as if i played with it for a few hours, then after reshaping the tip again it doesnt lose shape for months. Even when im done hammering the tip i dont notice much mushrooming if any.

How well do they hold chalk?

Tape off your ferrule and don't try and get so close. Then use the Porper Little Shaver and sandpaper to do the rest of the job. Works for me.

I, too, use a Talisman H tip --my first one lasted abut 1.5 years with 10-20hours per week. I only had to dress down the mushrooming once--and here 2 minutes with a nail file (120 grit) had it back to nothing. Mine hold chalk well, only being picky when extremes of offset are in use.

I use the Talisman soft as well as Elk Master Duds. Other than having to take care of a couple of slight mushrooms when breaking in the Talisman soft, I've never had a problem beyond that.
