My apologies----

To all those who tried to contact/PM me late last night and today, I apologize. Late last night, my computer came down with a mean virus. I have been at work on it since 9am trying to get it back up and running. While it is up and running for now, I don't know if it is totally operational yet. It keeps opening dozens of pop-ups and redirects all my addresses, etc. I have run Hijack this, trendmicro, ccleaner, avast AV software, and a couple of others...done boot virus checks, etc. I only recently got it to run at all.

cleaning up

Hey Joe,
I know that puter problems can be frustrating as hell. Definitely keep UP TO DATE on your AV software. I also highly recommend installing a spyware removal too. Run it often if you surf the web a lot. you will be suprised how much data mining/tracking crap gets into your computer via web sites.

This one is free and is very effective:
Ad Aware You can also update it weekly for free.

This one is also free and very effective:
Spybot S&D

Good luck. If you need any help feel free to PM me or I will give you my phone and we can walk through it.

PM me and I'll see if I can help you.

try a trial of Sana SafeConnect heuristic antivirus

Sana SafeConnect doesn't rely on virus signatures like NAV and McAfee, but is supposed to be able to detect new viruses based on their actions (Heurstics). If you have a new virus that has not been out long enough for Mcafee and NAV to have a definition for and fix for, then they can't help you because they rely on recognizing signatures, not activity. Free 15 day trial might be the key. Has been lauded as the best and newest technology solution for trapping new viruses not detectable by the leading anti-virus programs.

It is what I would definitely try in this case.

Hate to say it but usually once your system gets hit by spyware, it's too late. There's so much spyware out there, the anti-spyware software helps but can't do it all. I recommend that even if you get your computer back to perfect working order that you take the first available opportunity to reinstall (never a pleasant option). A lot of today's spyware does very nasty things like log all your passwords, bank account information, etc. so it's more than just a nuisance.

Thanks for all the input, folks. I am going to write all my data to CDs and then I will do a disk format and reinstall. I guess that is about the only way to truly know where everything stands. I appreciate all the help.

After restoring I highly recommend the following programs. All are free.

AVG 7.5 free edition
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot Search & Destroy
CCleaner

I usually use grisofts spyware scan and root kit scan. Have had pretty good luck with both. Clean up machines pretty good. Usually will then run something like windows defender, adaware, or the host of others to double check it.

Do you know how you picked up the virus?

Actually, I think I do. I am usually pretty smart about these things, but I think I got duped pretty well by a real slick one. I was opening a web page when I got an icon which said "You must update your flash viewer to display this site correctly". It looked very legit, and flash was my default viewer, so I clicked on it....big boo-boo.

I had the same or similar message recently and also clicked on it....no problems, as you described, yet. Although my machine does seem to be running a bit slower then usual.

It appears that the virus' name is "securepccleaner". I have also found "ZLOB", "yourprivacyguard","adwareremover2007" so far.

Did you get a virus warning of any kind?
Was this done maliciously?
Did you get it from a link on AZB?

My computer has pretty good virus protection, but I may have done the same thing. I haven't had any problems, but I am a little worried about it.

I don't know that it came from AZB posts. It popped up when there was a schedule/screen on the right side of the AZB mainpage that was "loading". It told me I needed to update my flash player to view it. I did not think anything of it. I have now discovered that I actually downloaded an exe file named FLASH_PLAYER_UPDATE and not Macromedia Flash update. Run a file search for flash and see if a file as the one I just described is in your system.

I am so glad i have a mac viruses are not a big deal them. after all there is like 1 virus for every 100,000 on a pc some big number like that

I will be limping along for the next couple of days until I have an opportunity to completely reconfigure my system. Please bear with me if you need to contact me. I do have a few very nice cues that I will try to list over the next couple of days, but we will just see how it goes.
