My Big Problem With Leagues.

Issues...

I play APA and have become more and more disatisfied...I Captain an 8-Ball Team here in the ATL area...and one thing seems apparent to me...you either have a bang up Team that has a real opportunity to win Divisions, Cities and make a run for Vegas, problem is when you get to Vegas your Team HC may have changed overall since you Qualified!?...or you get a group of people that have little or no opportunity to be Competitive outside their In-House group, or Local Division???...there seems to be no middle ground...too good, you gotta split up...not good enough, you'll never go past your Division. As for 'Sandbagging', some of it I think is due to the SL5/6 being a little too easy to attain, If the HC's were a little more stringent, players could 'Play' without fear of rising so quickly, there would be less Team splitting and better overall Competition amongst the lower SL's....I don't know, it's the only game in town for consistent opportunities to play, especially in the Team format...

Please elaborate

When league players decide they don't like it they'll find a better option. Until then, they keep doing the same thing they always do. Hard to feel sorry for people who whine and complain but keep enrolling.

You know what insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. When they decide to do something different, things will change. And change fast. Immediately.

Ok you cleared that up. And your right that is insanity! I play league but no handicap; no problem.

Only the APA Big Guy.

But then your son is an APA SL-4 "by design" I think you once said. So it surprises me that you would be the one to start this thread. It didn't take you long to find out that being a smart 4 is the best way to play the APA racket. And lo and behold your son is a 4, by design. Way to go coach.

Or have you now found religion in your old age and are giving up your old ways?

The APA is what it is.

No - My Son "IS" a 4 by talent.

My only design is that I steered him into golf and away from pool. He couldn't run a rack of 9 ball in 25 chances. He just plays the game for fun and drinks.

Re: Sandbagger

Hey Everyone,
I do not wish to start a fight here!
But; I think most readers in this thread have seen the Classic movie, "THE HUSTLER", which showed the game as it was played in my early years.

Now my question is: "Should that movie title be changed to", "THE SANDBAGGER"

The APA is a joke. The only way you can win is to sandbag.Nit tells it like it is,and as long as people keep excepting the APA as a "fair" league they have to deal with the repercussions. That is why me and Zim started our own league where we live.Come around to our way of thinking and the APA will be in big trouble. The thing I do not get is why no one has inhouse leagues anymore?NIT do tell? Almost every pool hall in the STL. area has APA matches 3 or 4 nights a week.Is that the only way nowdays to get people to play in your place. That is to bad,the only way to make money in the APA is go to Vegas.Everyone knows you have to sandbag to get there.Maybe everyone needs to see the corporate "hierarchy" of the APA and the BIG houses they live in to see that they are not in it for the good of the sport. My Son's friend was playing on their APA league last night. They both are 4's and are just playing for the fun and competitiveness of it. The captain told my son's friend that he had to lose on purpose to keep his standings.
He said he didn't want to and didn't care about winning a trip to Vegas. Believe me, this kids Dad could buy one of the big hotels in Vegas.
Anyway, the captain tells him he must lose or he will kick him off the team.

AND THAT "IN A NUTSHELL" IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH LEAGUES.

Is this supposed to be teaching young people (that are interested in pool) a good lesson about our game?

TY & GL

You can't really blame the team captain for that. The APA is a nothing but a sandbagging freeforall. I am not exaggerating, there are many, many players that shoot right around the PRO level that are rated 4's and 5's. The mentality of most teams in the APA is that you have to sandbag just to level the playing field.

No, please don't throw rocks at OHB. What is the APA's house made of?

I'm just talking about pool leagues. If I were to say all that other stuff, I'm sure someone on here would tell me not to throw rocks in my glass house.

If you really think about it, lying and cheating someone for their own money is worse than sandbagging in a league. You talk about your hustles as if you are proud of it. Glass house? More like a house made of toothpicks.

Being just a little sef-righteuos aren't you? What is the difference? They aren't sanbagging because they are competitive, they are doing it for the money and are out to steal something from somebody else.
Just one other note.
OHB is a grown man and doesn't need my defense, but it really is hard to hustle an honest person.

It's not like that everywhere. Our area does have sandbaggers too, but nothing major and most of the time they are dealt with properly and reported. That is one thing our League manager and office is good at Unfortunately it is not that same way everywhere. The majority of players I seen at the local league tourneys are actually playing at their skill level.

I do know that some states and areas really dont care enough to pay attention to player ratings and that is where we find the super 4's and 5's that run out at least 1 rack a night. That is the problem area, making the Vegas trip to APA Nationals and watching a 3 run out three racks in a row just because some league office doesnt really care enough to pay attention.

It's not the APA in general, just the APA in some areas. IMO the APA has done more good for the sport then bad by attracting more people to it.

How can I be self-righteous if I have nothing to do with the subject matter? I already made a point that most people in the APA sandbag to level the playing field, since sandbagging is so popular. Trying to level the playing field is being competitive still. And are you saying that all of the people that get hustled are dishonest and deserve to get robbed and conned? Come on man, you know that's not how it really is.

I happen to know APA officials who have been to many different parts of the country, and they say that sandbagging is everywhere, and it's gotten so bad that it's ridiculous.

I think it is not unusual for captains to want you to take a dive, it is unusual for them to threaten you with cutting from the team. I think neither all leagues nor all teams are like that.
If I were him I'd form a team built around you and destroy his former captain's team whenever possible. Just a thought.

I never said there wasn't. All I said was it is more prominent in some areas. In our area it is not that bad and definately tolerable.

I've got to agree with that, I'm probably a 'C' player yet I'm a 6 in APA 8-ball. I don't mind so much because there are plenty of other 5's and 6's at my skill level, but to be rated a 6 out of 7 really should demand a higher skill level.
