my custom shurtz cue

I met with Bob Owen on June 28 to talk about building a southwest style four point cue for me. While waiting for Gabe to play Joey Grey in the finals of the one pocket tournament at Shooter's in Olatha, Bob and I talked about what I wanted in a custom cue. I have always liked the fancy SW rings and I wanted to have highly figured bacote for the points. This is what we came up with:

four bacote points into a birdseye maple forearm
bacote butt sleeve
natural maple, teal, black laminates on the points fancy SW rings at ABCDE
19 oz with the balance point 18 in from butt end
Black irish linen wrap

Bob called me last Tuesday to tell me he was ready to put the wrap on and he shipped Thursday. When I placed the order he told me to expect it around the first of October. I received the cue last Friday, a little more than a month early.

I've been shooting with it for the past 3 days. The balance is perfect. The feel is so sweet. The workmanship is top notch. I love it. Bob, I couldn't have gotten a better cue. Thank you.

And NO its not for sale.

Beautiful Cue

I absolutely love this cue. It looks much better than a Southwest in my opinion. I sold my plain four point Shurtz awhile back. I am going to have to give Bob a call. Thanks for posting the pictures of this great cue.

Kevin, Thanks for the kind comments. I too love it. I have been playing with it almost nonstop during my free time. My former cue was a Meucci HOF-2 with an OB1 shaft and I really liked the hit of the OB1, but I got to say that this cue feels even better than my Meucci/OB1.

I asked Bob to use a 5/16 x 18 joint so that I could continue to use my OB1 shaft. I have screwed the OB1 on and test hit with it, but have consistently been using the original Shurtz shaft with no noticable difference.

I have to repeat that Bob was wonderful to work with. He listened to what I wanted in a cue. He made suggestions to improve on my ideas and he took the time to explain some cuebuilding ideas and concepts so that I could have the best cue possible. And finally, he finished my cue, not on time, but rather ahead of schedule. I would recomend a custom Shurtz cue from Bob Owen to anyone.

Sweet looking cue. It has the kind of touches I like--fancy dash trim rings and an attractive veneer combo. You get a lot of custom cue for your dough with Bob Owen. His work is under appreciated.
