My Everyday Gus Szamboti Cue

Here are some pic's of my everyday playing cue. It is a Gus Szamboti with bright veneers and has two Paul Mottey shafts. Unfortunately, I don't have the original Gus shafts. It is my understanding they were broken over a pool table when the previous owner had a large loss. Can you imagine doing that? Barry has authenticated the cue and I intend to have him refinish it and make two new shafts. If I can ever put it down long enough.

Wow - the new Hoppe Gus and this one.
Very nice cue, I love the work.
Are you going to play the Hoppe Gus?

Yes, I am going to play with the Hoppe style Gus, very, very carefully. The everyday Gus has the normal dings from life in a pool room and I am still careful with it. When I go to the bathroom, the Gus goes with me.

Just curious. are you going to play with the new Barry shafts or the original Gus shafts ???

I struggled with that tuesday nite at the pool room. I decided to chalk one of the Barry shafts. Now, I am wondering how the original Gus shafts play. I think cues should be played and I might just chalk them all and be done with it. When I got the cue Tues morning it was unchalked.

Love your title to this thread- "My everyday Gus Szamboti." You are the envy of many on AZ. I too have a Gus similar to your everyday cue. I notice you're going to have Barry refinish it. There's been a lot of debate wether to keep a cue of this caliber original or refinish. I cant decide if I should refinish mine or not. What's your take on this arguement?

Thanks-

Mike

Mike, just to offer my input here....there are two basic types of collectors when it comes to this. 1) the hardcore 'originalist' and 2) those who want their collectible cues pristine. There may be some fence riders, but from my experience, generally someone is either one of the other, and I can tell you that there are a lot more 2) out there than 1). For that reason, you will see retailers sometimes having cues refinished....it helps sell the cue because that's what the majority of buyers want.

My feeling is that if the cue has finish deteriorated to the point where inlays, prongs/veneers, rings, ivory joints, etc. are compromised by not having finish over it and are exposed, then IMO you should have the cue refinished. But in the case of something ultra collectible like a Gus, you should try to stick with a very reputable cuemaker to ahve that work done (Barry S., Pete T., Gina, etc.)

If the cue is a daily player and those elements still protected, there's probably not a need to refinish it.

Just my opinion....others may view this differently.

This cue was refinished at least once by Paul Mottey when he made the shafts approximately 10-15 years ago.

I see. I had a similar experience w/ my SW. When I autheniticated it w/ Laurie, she said the finish wasnt original. So I had SW refinish/rewrap it although it didnt need it. In my mind re-finishing the cue by SW brought the cue back to "original"

Here is pictures of my everyday Gus.The case is a fellini bought at a later date. What's the odds of finding an old fellini with my name on it.The pictures do not clearly show the veneers of black, orange, green, natural into ebony points with a birdseye maple forearm. It also features a bushka ring above the wrap as well as maple stitching above and below the six oblong maple windows in the ebony butt. The cue was orginally made for Dennis Searing in the 80's.It has been refinished and authenticated.

Very nice Gus. I wish I could find a Fellini case with my name on it. Wonder what the odds are?

I hit some balls with this cue...<fingers to lips> "Muah".

I'm going to start saving so my first born can have one when he retires, ha.

Dick Abbott - Szamboti

I went to Virginia and got to run a little with Dick Abbott. He also plays with his Szamboti. It played great, very great. It had some, as he called them "battle scars".

It was very nice, but he cracked me up playing with Szamboti, in leagues.

But I also went riding in his corvette on some frigging mountain and I am convinced the cue will last longer than Dick Abbott.

LOL

"Battle Scars", LOL!! That's what Barry called some of my dings on my cue and refused to do anything to them when I asked. But he did take my cue in for a "tune up" earlier this year and told me he'd fix the "chip" in my finish that I did not know I had!!

Battle Scars... Grrrr....

Bright? Actually very nicely paired colors. Congrats on the cue!!
