My experience with Schmelke

Seems to me that the OP was looking for French service from a hamburger joint.
Exactly! No offense to the OP, but I can see a few of my family and friends doing the same. The more money they make, the more obsessed they are with saving it. It just seems to snowball into near insanity, at least for the folks I know.

I would disagree. I'm not sure what measurements that are badly off and unfriendliness have to do with the price point. It sounds like carelessness to me.

If you buy a Japanese handmade knife in the 200 range, you get an work of art from a master who spent years perfecting their craft.

This ain’t Japan

Here's a couple of pictures - both cues are the same specs.
The ring is double the width on one compared to the other.
The butt cap on one is bigger than the other. It also has a (reverse) taper to it and more chamfer compared to the other. The butt cap diameter, width and chamfer were part of my specs. There should not have been a taper.
Some of the points are crooked.

I think you expected too much from a low end production cue company.
Schon or Pechauer would have met your expectations.

Interesting comment, and I agree. To the OP : what custom cue maker HAS met your expectations on an order ?

Dave <-- has 3 Schmelkes and each order was handled well and the end product was fine ... not in the same category as my Blackcreek, PDF, Tucker, etc., but certainly a good value cue

And I don't see where th op said how much he paid each for them.

You specified and are worried about the butt cap? Wow. They probably got a box of five thousand of them from People’s Rubber Product Factory Number 2 in Shanghai, and that is what you’ll get as well. I have a Joss that plays really well with a Viking butt cap because I didn’t want to order just that from Joss and pay their price plus shipping, making it four times the cost of the Viking I tacked on to a Seybert’s order.

it is how does hit it for the cheap cue price that counts. if it hits good( a ton :)) then you got a bargain.
if you want a show piece or a collectors item you have to pay up.

its like going to home depot and buying a hammer and finding out the wood in the handle isnt perfect.:)

The butt cap and the bumper are not the same thing. You are confusing terms friend.

No. When a supplier accepts the work and you pay per individual component (ring in this case) and the measurement of that ring is written in the quote/order form, they have to deliver what they committed and got paid for. It has nothing to do with the price point, which is not as cheap as you would think anyway. If you order a 6mm allen key and receive a 3mm one, will you be ok with it because it's "solid metal" or "value for money"??

That point is pretty bad. I've bought several cheap blanks from them without any issue. Maybe it was the first day at work for whoever was assigned to assemble and taper the butt.

no you should get what you ordered. but you ordered from a bargain basement company.
i suppose you can send it back and get it corrected or just live with it.
or resell the cue and learn a lesson. and move on.

If I ordered a tool and was given the wrong size it would not be functional for what I intend to use it for. That’s a completely different scenario. Not a good comparison at all.
Just move on, chalk it up to a lesson learned. I have low end customs that have imperfections. If I want flawless aesthetics I pay for it. It’s really just that simple. You tried to save some money and it didn’t work out for you.

I've had good experiences with Schmelke. Best was ordering a break cue, having a brain-fail and asking it turned down to 12mil like my player. They called me after I made the order, and we agreed to have them build a sensible breaker. Cue was cheap, breaks great. My player is also a Schmelke. It is a plain cue with a big screw. I attach it to an OB Fusion 6 these days. It isn't fancy, but I really enjoy playing with it. Both cues are about as basic as basic can be, but they both play nice. I like the utilitarian design of their basic cues and find they do the job just fine.
