I'm gunna get right to the point so I don't waste anyone's time. How do you fix you stroking arm not being perpendicular to the floor. My elbow sticks out like a chicken wing and I can't seem to find a way to consistently fix it. Any thoughts? I know I have asked a lot of questions about my stroke but I think this is my major problem.

Good evening sir,

I'm not an instructor and there are TONS of folks on here that can speak to this better than I can....but I'll offer my opinion.

About a month ago I started a thread, http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=157156, to give props to Scott Lee as a great instructor.

In that lesson I suffered from the same problem. My explanation won't do justice to Scott's, RandyG's or any other of the great instructors on here but I'll throw a bit of what I learned during that session out there.

As I mentioned, I suffered from a similar, but equally confounding problem...dropping my elbow. Scott very simply took an empty 20 ounce bottle of soda that was filled with sand. He placed it on my perpindicular elbow. If I dropped my elbow or twisted my shoulder, the bottle fell to the floor.

Simple and effective. SPF is the way to go. Set, Pause, Finish....ScottLee and RandyG can present much better than I can ever think to.

If you're truly serious about getting your game to another level, I need to recommend without question you get lesson from one of the great instructors you can find on here. Worth every nickle in my opinion.

Good luck to you sir.

Technique not stroke could be the problem...........

Hi there travis,

I feel your pain. But it might not be your stroke but your technique. If you watch many of the pros you will see that their stroke looks to be very long. Actually the bridge is out there about a foot and a half but as far as the stroke it is only about 4 to 6 inches.

Many players are bringing that tip right back to their bridge hand. You might have to do this on a real big draw stroke but when you do this your odds of missing are greater. Partly because you brought the tip back so far. Partly because of the strength of the stroke.

Some of the pro players in the past look like they are shoving the ball sometimes. And they won world championships doing it like this. Allen Hopkins for one.

No matter how anything looks try having your bridge out there but only use about 4 or five inches of stroke. This will increase your acuracy and make up for any mechanics that aren't quite right. Your will still have a 12 inch stroke but 6 or 7 inches of it will be after you hit the cue ball. Your follow through. On shots that you need to use more stroke you can let it out and see what happens.

Other than that it is really hard to diagnose over the internet.
Good Luck Travis. If this helps you some let me know Geno..........

There're plenty of players that have slightly different basic fundamentals. as long as the cue is going in a straight line it shouldn't be an issue.

do some stroke drills and see if you're cueing straight. shoot some long straight in shots and see if you're cueing straight. if you are then it's not a big deal but if you aren't you might want to practice in front of a mirror or something for a while

you ever video tape yourself? it's a good tool for improvement

Hello Travis,

You may want to look into Max Eberle's new DVD which is 4.5 hours of solid fundamentals. You should really work with an instructor to solve your problem.

I have had students who had the chicken wing. For some, it was a huge problem, and for a few, it wasn't causing any problem with the delivery of the cue, so I left it alone. Without seeing you shoot, it's pretty difficult to tell if it is a problem or not.

If you can schedule a few hours with a qualified instructor (I recommend the SPF instructors on here) you should be able to get it all straight.

A good stroke is far easier to achieve than many players might think.
Set, Pause, and Finish.

Steve
