Well the VFW got their velocity amd I got schooled. God that was tough. What a piece of junk stanley stapler I got. I just ordered a duofast so the next job will go alot better. Got the bed on just fine, that diamond video and the scotch grip worked great. But I had to scrape off all the old glue from at least 3 other jobs. My hands are aching. I also glued the rails but I don't think its gonna hold well. I'm going back over to Libby in a week for a tournament and with the new stapler I'll take care of them. My big dissapointment was getting the corners folded. The velocity had alot of stretch and I played hell getting it on without wrinkles. It looks ok after they were on but I know what they can't see. Definate hack job from the back. Theres gotta be a better way than that penguin DVD. Hell I couldn't even get it close. I know that stapler had a lot to do with it but I'm sure there are folding techniques that I can learn. Thanks for the help guys. Sorry no pictures to embarassed. Don

stapler

That duo fast stapler is not a good one to use...don't make the mistake of wasting $235 on one of those electric staplers, they sink the staple into the wood cutting the cloth and chewing up the wood because there is no way to limit the depth of how far it drives the staples unless you dismantle the tool and make adjustment.. Get one of the staplers like I'm showing you with about 58 P.S.I air line pressure, it will save you not chewing up rails and about $100.oo even after you buy a compressor..take the air stapler and hold down the trigger with air hose attached causing the hammer foot to stick out. Use a file to file down the hammer so its not sinking the staple so deep into the wood, that simple mod is not possible with the duo fast stapler....only my suggestion if you want to not chew up rails and cloth. Oh' its smaller, lighter and one of the best tools I use to get great results'..

Rob, what size staples does that use? I'm looking at guns from 1/4 ,3/16,3/8 and 1/2 in crown sizes. I want to be able to dig em out so I'm leaning toward 3/8's. [same size as t50 staples in my electric.]

stapler

That gun uses staples from 1/4 inch crown staples to 5/8 crown..20 guage staples

I think you meant 1/4" LEG to 5/8" with a 1/2" crown. These guns are from Harbor Freight. Watch the sales and they get down to $16 each. They use the same size staples as the Duo-Fast, the 5000 series. Staples can also be purchased at Sears which is nice when out on the road somewhere and you run out on a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks Zack, I knew what he meant. I canceled the 5418 duofast order this morning. 3/16 crown is to narrow. You have a 5000 series? what size crown?

I use the same Harbor Frieght gun. You want the 1/2" crown staples. I use 1/4" leg for cloth and 3/8" for leather pocket tabs. I know some other guys use 1/2" leg for the pocket tabs.

You CAN get the 1/2" crown x 1/4" leg staples at Sears if you're in a jam, but DAMN they're expensive. I still use DuoFast 5000 series staples and order all mine from Linc in Indianapolis. You used to be able to get them at Home Depot, but I think they all discontinued the sizes we use and now just carry the narrow crown staples and guns in the carpet department.

You know guys I really want an electric stapler. I've found out I don't want a narrow crown stapler but I see duofast makes a 3/8 and a 1/2 crown model. The 3/8 takes the most popular staples right? T50 arrows? 1/2 inch harder to find but as Josh said the 5000 series works. I checked out you tube and a mech was showing the basic tools of the trade and he has an electric duo fast.[ don't know what model but if it works for him]? If I use a 1/2 inch crown model that shouldn't cut up the cloth should it? Don

I used an electric stapler for a long time until I was introduced to the pneumatic stapler by Glen. I love how light weight it is, and the fact it can be modified to not cut through the cloth when you are really leaning on it. Also, I can buy a nice little Senco compressor, and about 3 air staple guns for the same price as one of those electric Duo-Fast guns.

Duo-Fast EWC-5018A That is the model number for the electric gun that uses the 1/2" crown staples.

I do keep an electric gun in my truck and in the shop for a backup if the compressor ever takes a dump, but I have switched over to pneumatic completely and will not go back. I also like the fact that I can carry around a couple different staple guns for repairs or anything else, and already have the air to power it.

No matter what size staples you use with the electric gun, it can shoot through the cloth if you press on it too hard.

Ok Zack Thats probably the same road that most of you traveled so I'll take your advice and go pneu. How quiet is your compressor? Don

Its a little Senco compressor, and it is quiter than a vaccume cleaner. It is not obnoxious to have running in someone's house while you are having a conversation. Another nice thing is that it fits into a standard milk crate, so you can just throw it in the back of the truck, and store the staples, hose and staple gun in there.

stapler

I use 5/16 leg staples, duo fast brand 5010C..last box I got at menards hardware store for 4.98+ tax.. The compressor I use is nice n quite and small but runs the stapler great,I also have a ECW 5018A that I took apart and used a file to shorten the hammer that drives the staples..I never use it anymore' jack as a back up... I stick to using the pneumatic stapler on a coil hose and can't even tell that the air hose is there..
Zack' thanks for correction my mistake on the crown for the LEG..I was on lunch and did not have much time to post..

Rob, just ordered the same stapler from harbor. Picked up a 2gal. 135# campbell hausfeld compressor from true value. Now I can work on my technique. I'll post some pictures if I ever get beyond being a hack. Thanks everyone for the help. :)

It was mentioned before, but now when you get the staple gun, get it hooked up to the compressor, and pull the trigger and do not let go. The plunger will stay exposed. Now take a grinder or belt sander and take the excess off until the plunger is flush with the rest of the face of the gun.

flush it is. Obvious after you think about it. Thanks
