It takes a few hours, but I`m pretty sure it will go quite a bit faster when I`ve done a few more and have worked out some of the kinks.
 
Looks GREAT. I did a few decades ago and to me the hardest part was cutting the angle at the start and end. Did you wax or Shoe Polish after? Nice looking gloss finish.

How hard is it to do without a full cue repair setup? Is this doable by hand? I'm sure many others would also appreciate a general workflow for this sort of neat project!

It would be hard. I`m not sure how you would get the grip evenly sanded in a reasonably amount of time without a lathe.
