My game improved...not sure why

There are two situations in which I feel like I need to play pool every non-working waking moment of the day: When I am playing better than ever and when I am playing worse than normal.

I learn from both of them.

Good post, I know exactly what you mean.

Try not worry about whether it will last, just play and focus on your game. If you put too much thought into the whys of your jump in form, you may think yourself into becoming out of stroke.

I've reasoned myself into a slump before. I was playing the best snooker of my life but at the same time some of worst pool I've played at my current level. It didn't make sense to me, I kept obsessing over it and the moment I had a bad day at the snooker table I went "aha I AM in a snooker slump too!". So instead of just letting that day go and coming back with a positive attitude I walked in hoping my game wouldn't be too terrible each day.

I started to break out of it when someone suggested that I stop obsessing over it and just focus on playing. Just focus on a smooth stroke and thinking my way through the racks.

It was exactly 1 year ago that I originally posted this topic that jcpoolgod brought back to life! Since then I have had some highs and lows but I am still moving forward. I recently won a 9 ball tournament with a decent field of players.
Every time i think I have this game figured out something happens that shows me I still have a long way to go. :)

congrats on your recent improvement!

Because you're an A player I dont think your stroke suddenly changes, I think you had a mental change.
You suddenly became more confident, more confortable, and/or had more belief in yourself and quit thinking about things so much!

Your mind is finally getting out of the way, and letting your body do what it knows how to do!

---someone asked Michael Jordan once "did you plan to do that double-clutch alley-oop dunk before you jumped?
"No, I never think about it, I just do it"

Jump

I would attribute it to Mental Clarity. Sounds like you went from guessing to knowing what to do. It's kind of like struggling with a theory, and then waking up one day, and the theory then makes perfect sense.

There are certain times of the month when your concentration and focus are greater than at other times. Sounds like you hit upon one of these times. When playing now, think back about how you felt when everything was going right, and try to reproduce it in the future.

Pretty sure poolteacher nailed it

At some point when we put enough hours in doing something we break over into an area where we no longer have to micromanage the details. Remember the first time you drove a car? It wouldn't go straight down the road for fifty feet without constant attention. Now we drive while fiddling with the radio, talking on the cell, listening to the smart broad on the GPS and eating crawfish and flipping the heads out the window at the idiot tailgating us!(OK I admit the crawfish are a Louisiana thing but some folks are eating crawfish fast enough while driving that you can follow the trail of heads and find everywhere they went.)

At some point the same thing happens shooting pool. You make the object ball and the cue ball goes to where you wanted it next and you really didn't give any thought to where or how hard you needed to hit the cue ball. You knew these things without any conscious thought. Patterns are read at little more than a glance most of the time also. Now we are in the moment, living in the present. When our minds are thinking thoughts in words we really aren't in the moment even if we are only a tiny bit ahead or behind.

When we aren't thinking with words we are just performing. There is no room for doubt or fear or indecision. Every inning at the table is once continuous action from start to finish other than the pause to wait for somebody to rack again.

I think your hard work is now paying off for you!

Have you ever had that happen? I broke through a barrier Sunday and I'm not sure what I did that caused it. I was doing lots of drills that haven't really helped me. I struggled last league session winning 10 of 12 matches. ( I was never really on my game and playing felt difficult)

So Sunday I got my IPAT books back from a friend who had been borrowing them and I decided to work back through them start to finish. I got half way through the first book and decided to take a break and play some nine ball. All of the sudden my game was exceptional and effortless... for me anyhow. There isn't really anything in the 1st book that should have caused this change. I'm not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth but I want to know what I did so that I can repeat it.

Before when my game took a jump I could attribute it to learning a new strategy or better position play. Now I am seeing patterns so clearly that running out takes less effort and its almost like I'm just going through the motions to finish the game. I am able to decide what I want to do and just do it. I still miss here and there but even that doesn't seem like a big deal.

Tell me this will last forever. I am trying desperately to find a good money game while I am in this stroke.

Enjoy your new improvements and let it soak in good. And then you can tell if it is there to stay! I think it is. When you want something bad enough, and you think about it and try to improve on it, good things happen. Good work. Come to New Orleans, Louisiana, and you can get a good money game! Buffalo's Billiards, the Worlds Pool Hall.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.
