In poplar mo. they only want the lacal players to win so why do they let other people play. They under rate local players and over rate out town players, so you are giving a player the 8 and breaks that can beat you even, but you dont know until after the match. The locals always buy these players in the calcutta. I was moved to a AAA and I am just a huckle berry so I am done.
Now I come to visit my sister in Jackson, ms and go to the green room to play in a monthly. and a local that I dont know tells them how I play because he saw me playing in another location. I win two matchews hill to hill and the TD says that he needs to raise me because I am playing too good, but the fag said he would raise me if I won another match. Thanks for listening.

Yep, pool is still imperfect in the handicap department. It takes a really honest TD to do them well, look at how Hard Times uses tgrm, to great effect!
 
Ive seen tournaments that error on both sides. Trust me, for the locals, they handicapped it correctly. :grin:

When you have someone who is not "known" by their ongoing handicap number, IMO its better to error on handicapping the unknown higher and let the handicap even out over time.

Ive seen tournaments where they start all new players at a 'minimum', and Ive seen players bust that same tournament.
One example: TD started an A player at the minimum of 65. His real number should have been >95. He had C players spotting him games. How happy do you think the local crowd was on this one? And the funny thing was it was an ongoing weekly progressive tournament that culminated in a final spring tournament, open only to people who had placed 1st or 2nd at some point during the 'season'. The funniest part was that you were entered into the final tournament at whatever you "qualified" at, and he qualified for the 'end of the season' tournament as a 65 because he won his first tournament. Who do you think went the highest in the calcutta? :eek::thumbup:
 
Don't other areas or states use something similar to MYPOOLSTATS like we use here in WI for handicapped tournaments? I think MPS is a great thing for establishing players ratings. I suppose a guy can still sandbag but only for a limited time, it will quickly catch up to him. Even with BCA and I would imagine other organizations a player can sandbag. In BCA I suppose the easiest thing to do would be to join a league so you have an established rating and just avoid state BCA tournaments where your rating gets bumped for high finishes. MPS tracks league and tournament play, as long as LOs and TDs report the results.
