My LASIK adventure.

Donovan said:
My left eye was yesterday and it was even easier than the right eye, since it was even easier to relax. It was only about 20 seconds longer than the other one. They took the contact out today and I am still dilated, but I am finally free. Every few days I will let you know how things develop. I know that my right eye is already starting to clear and sharpen. I may try and play on Thursday, even though it is a little early for any realistic results yet.

I just called them to see where my eyes were at.

Both were Hyper-optic.
Right eye: 40/40 +5 -1.25
Left eye: 40/150 +7 -1.75

It sounds like many of you understand all this stuff better than I do. All I know, is I could only read the top line of the eye chart with my left eye alone without glasses and the 3rd line down with them.

My next exam is in about 3 weeks.

I will throw some rep to those of you with input on all of this. I appreciate you letting me know this is worth doing by all of your questions and comments. Thanks.

Donovan, we appreciate you providing all of the details of your surgeries and recovery. Good luck. I'm sure it will help others down the road.

Week 1 Report

Right eye - Day 7
Left eye - Day 3

Well, I tried to see how clear the balls look across the table. My right eye is the dominant eye anyway, but I already can see the edges of the balls. It feels like they are as sharp as it was with my glasses. However, my mind may be seeing better than I am since I am excited about this.

Bias understood, I gave myself a little "not so scientific" experiment. So on my 8' table, I tried to thin cut "nudge" a ball a few times end to end to see if I could do it without adjusting for feel. I was missing it slightly to the right (I am right handed too). I still had to adjust a little with feel to nudge the ball. What does this mean?

I have no idea. :o

Oh well, I am just reporting how it is going. That is the best I can do. When the balls looked like earmuffs, I was pretty consistent in nudging a ball, but the amount of nudging was inconsistent. I will try this again in a few days. That inconsistency is still there. Now of course my brain may have to be reprogrammed for this kind of accuracy with being able to see the balls for the first time.

It all feels like a never-ending struggle between physical and psychological.

Straight vision sight: My left eye is still bit fuzzy alone (and it was this way with glasses too), but my right eye seems to be getting really close to my glasses vision, but not quite there yet. :)

Week 2

Right eye - Day 17
Left eye - Day 13

Well I am still adjusting to the idea of having my sight switched from being far-sighted to near-sighted and try to heal toward the middle. I did play a friend of mine last week who was beating me pretty good there for awhile. I could hardly miss a shot. After getting down into my stance, I noticed myself adjusting my aim and that was when my brain was trying to compensate like before. Athough, it wasn't long after missing a few of those, that I just simply stood up and reset myself, got down in my stance and shot. The adjust almost stopped completely toward the end of our session. Next thing I know I was running racks and playing safties better than I ever remember doing so.

So knowing that my eyes will only sharpen more as time goes on. I can only say at this point, this was the best thing I have ever done for my game and for myself in general.

Week 3

Right eye - Day 27
Left eye - Day 23

I got back from my check-up today. The doctor said my eyes are healing great. I am already seeing at a 20/20 range and read 2 of 5 letters on the 20/15 line. My lefet eye is at 20/30 and my right eye is a strong 20/20. He told me that I was further along in the healing than he expected already. So I may make 20/15 with both eyes together before it is done. The best I hoped for in my left eye was 20/25. So I am already happy with that result. I go back the middle of March for my next check-up.

Sitting in front of the computer for 12.5 hours a day for 4 days in a row was a little rough right after the surgery, but I got through it ok. I did have a headache at about the 7th hour during work for a few days, but after a little Advil, it was gone. I am not having these issues any longer. I think this happens to people who go from Far-sighted to Near-sighted. I say this after having asked some people at work about their experiences. It truly is a small price to pay.

I played for about 4 hours today and the balls are crystal clear and I was again so thrilled to see the balls. I have had no inclination to adjust when down in my stance. As a matter of fact, I totally forgot it was something to look for until reading the last post I wrote here. So it is true, your brain adapts quickly. It is so amazing, I really expected this to be an issue, but I guess......I can get over it now. ;)

I have a special contact lens prescription just for playing pool, and they work really well. Have been considering the surgery for several years and you are giving me renewed hope.

Glad yours is working out especially well.

had my lasik on 1/2/07

I had my lasik done 1 week ago today. Went to Tylock in Irving, tx to get the "CustomVue" lasik with "intralase". (basically the flap was cut with a laser instead of a blade)

My pre-surgery glasses prescription was:

left +2.50
right +2.75
(i had a slight astigmatism, but don't know the numbers)

My first follow up appointment is on the 12th. It's only been a week & my vision is getting close to what it was with my glasses on pre-surgery.

The actual correction that was done to my eyes was somthing like +3.33 in both eyes. The reason i was told, was that my eyes "compensate" for most of my bad vision, & i would be nearsighted at first after surgery & heal to normal vision. I did try to hit a few balls 2 days ago & could see very well for about an hour & then my eyes became dry & irritated. So i had to call it quits.

One thing i did notice for that first hour though, is i have to learn how to AIM AGAIN!!!! Evidently, i haven't been aiming for a long time, i've just been shooting from memory.

Question for Donovan: How long after surgery were you able to play without your eyes drying out?

Well, they did seem a bit dry the second week when I did finally go and play. It wasn't very smokey at the hall that day, but I also added the drops in every couple of hours just to make sure. I think tha earlyon the drops are really important and it helps them heal faster if they are not dry. Right now I can go 4 or 5 hours, so it doesn't take too long. Just have the drops handy. Thanks for the comment.

Since I have gotten my eyes done, three other people from my work place have gone and gotten theirs done recently too. It is working out real well for all of them...course they don't play pool. LOL I wish you all the best JIM!

Right eye - Day 42
Left eye - Day 38

Since I do sit in front of a computer for 12.5 hours a day when I do work, my eyes do get tired.,,,more than before. I just want to close them for a minute or so after about 8 hours and let them rest. I am sure this is just the adjusting, adapting, and healing. I say healing in the loosest of terms, because they already feel great and I am seeing great. My left eye, is better than it was with glasses, but it is still tough to use. Things are still tough to read, but I can see the letters better than before.

I don't know if my left eye will ever work completely, but as bad as it was in the beginning, even with glasses, I could care less. I don't know if they can work on it again when it has healed completely, but I will ask when I see them again. I do know that the only time I notice this is when I close my right eye only. SO since I don't walk around like that, who cares. If I start walking around like that, I may need a different kind of doctor.

I played yesterday and I had no trouble seeing anything...no halos, no shadows, nothing that others have mentioned. The sharpness and crispness of the balls feels like a miracle to me. :) I don't what else can be said. I feel really fortunate. <== Man, do I love sunglasses!

Drops

Well for the guy that said his eyes are dried out. It will feel like that for a while, and if you get dependent on the drops it will feel like that for a long while. Two things I did that worked out great for me where as follows. I first got off the drops as soon as I could. Only used them if I had to. I still carry some in my cue case, just in case I need them. The other thing I did, was get on a really good eye vitamin on a daily basis. This helped my eyes to heal better, and also helped my eyes to produce the natural tears. I had my surgery about 5 years ago, and have no halos, no star burst, nothing that would warrant a bad choice. Now after the two year mark I had to go back in for a touch up, but it has been 3 years since that happened, and I am still reading 20/10! So in my opinion one of the best things you can do is get on a good eye vitamin. I mean after what you paid for that surgery, vitamins are worth it! You only have one set of eyes, so why not take extra special care of them?

Very nice vision.
How did you do in the recent Corpus Christie pool tournament?

Donovan,
Hope all works out for you. Maybe next time you're in town you can give me the 8 now?

Not well

I didn't play bad, but I let my nerves get the best of me. It was my first big tournament, so I didn't expect to be all loose and play my best. I got out after the first two rounds, but I really should have been able to win my second round. The first round, that guy was freakin good!

Anyway, know that I know what to expect maybe I can play better the next time. LOL

Thanks for asking.

(Oh, but in league that night I went undefeated. LOL)
