Got knocked out of the Alaska State Open 9 Ball tournament about 1:00 this morning. I think there are around 6 guys left from a field of 35. I made some really good safeties, kicks and combos. I also missed some easy shots that might of won a couple of matches for me. I saw one guy run a 5 pack and out on my buddy, which impressed the heck out of me. I suspect the guy that will win it though is a guy that wins it often and is just a player of higher caliber then the rest of us. I think he spent some time on the pro circuit years ago. Any way, I had a ball and was over all happy with my matches. I play to have fun and I did. Unfortunately the wonderful 9' Diamond tables need new cloth and it did not look to me like any one bothers to clean balls. The place has new owners, so I hope they can do a better job in the future. Alaska is really small stuff in the pool scene, but since that tournament is our "poster child" it should have good cloth and clean balls. Next "big Alaska tournament " is in February and my table is being set up Friday, so I will have plenty of time to practice. I don't expect to win, but I hope to place in one of the top 3 spots some day. Some guys are better then me, every one has bad matches, no one wins all the time, long days are hard on this old guy, stay focused and grind it out! Above all else have fun!

I lost a dear friend several years ago that ran the Alaska State 9 Ball back in the 70's. When he ran it, you had to be a State resident to play. You wouldn't think that would be a big deal in Alaska, right?
Well, one year he had 2 guys show up and wanted to play. He asked if they were AK residents. They said yes. He asked where they lived. They gave some generic address. He told them they couldn't play. When they asked why he told them "Because you're Danny DiLiberto and you're Louis Roberts!"
Now that's going on the road!

Do you know a Shawn Azaris? Probably spelled wrong but i think he lives up there.
Congrats Mr. AkGuy, at least you enjoyed yourself, that is the important thing. I am completely on your side about nice equipment. Nothing annoys me worse than ratty cloth or beat up balls that look like they were sanded on the sidewalk. Was this tournament in a pool hall? Do they not have a ball polisher? I even bought myself a Diamond ball polisher just to use at home on my home ball sets. We have a new amusement company supplying tables were I play in league, they are 7' Diamond bar boxes but have the cheap $19.95 ball sets in them with a red dot cue ball. What I do not understand is that as far as I know the Smart Tables come with a nice Aramith ball sets, where did they go I wonder?

The tournament was held in a pool hall that has new owners and I am not meaning to put them down as I am know recovering tables is a big expense and they may not have thought about the balls needing cleaning. I am glad they were willing to purchase the place and keep it running and wish them the best. They have several 9 and 7 foot Diamond tables that are fun to shoot on. They are encouraging BCA league play and promoting weekly 9 ball handicap tournaments. I don't get in there often as I live 150 miles away. If they were local I would be there most regular customer.

btown - Tony (Sean) Azares is still up there 'I think' - he was usually down on the Kenai Peninsula area - which is where AKguy also lives.

JMD in VA: who are you referring to that ran the 9-Ball back in the 70's? We probably know some of the same people. There were only a few pool rooms back then - and I knew most of the players/owners etc.
