My New Hoppe Style Gus Szamboti

Here are some pics of my new Szamboti that I just received yesterday. I think there were about 100 Hoppe style Szamboti's made by Gus. I am grinning from ear to ear to have one. It is all original and in 98% condition. Oh, and it plays real good.

And, I forgot to tell everyone where I got this gem. I bought the Gus from Mike Gartland D/B/A Quality Cues. I prepaid for the cue based on Mike's reputation and the photo's he took. The cue arrived promptly and was exactly as represented. I have just purchased a John Showman cue from Mike and will prepay this one too. I am also on the lookout for a fancy Gus. So, get busy Mike.

What a nice buy...
A Quality Cue!

Ok... I DON'T own a Szamboti yet! Anyone else want to rub it in more?

Someone please help me by showing me a Gus that I don't slobber and plot a second mortgage over! Save me by showing me one I dislike! Anyone?? anyone? Oh, God help me! I am an addict without a fix...

You just got the nice Black Boar.
We all drooled over that one.
It was your turn to drool again.

Oh, thanks for the comment about the BB... I must say... my game is coming back thanks to that cue.

Man, I have a fever! I sleep with that stick next to my bed! My wife thinks I am cheating on her.

how did the previous owner keep it so perfect? the linen wrap doesnt even look used. who made the new shafts?

I know how you feel. I picked up the cues last Christmas after years of not playing and like you are looking for gems to keep.
The Black Boar you got is a beauty.
The Gus is awesome.
I will dream about both and hope for a Barry that both of you can drool over...LOL.

I bought the cue out of a private collection. Barry Szamboti authenticated it, made the new shafts, cleaned the wrap and polished the butt only. When I received the cue yesterday it was unchalked. Naturally, I chalked it and played with it last night.

Wish I could have been there when you first hit a ball with that baby! I slobbered so much I am now dehydrated. Ugh!

Alpine:

I am also not trying to get drool on your avatar bike. I will wait for your Barry photos... Just give me a little time to recover from this Gus, will ya?

The Bike is a 2001 Road King Classis with hard bags being that I can lock them.
I have invested so much in accessories on that bike that I could have had 2 or 3 Barry's by now.
But we know about men and their toys...
Not enough toys and not enough time to play.

After seeing the Gus pictures again (saw these prior to the sale), makes me more determined to get a Barry.
So the search continues for the Barry...

That cue is CLEAN and begging to be played with.

My friend Andy (RIP) had a highly decorated Gus (w/ original shipping box, fellini, and 4 shafts, 3 of which were unplayed with) that he used EVERY DAY! Those cues were playing cues that just happened to look good. :)

Just to round-out the discussion, what type of a Barry are you looking for? And how serious are you looking?

Also: where was your avatar photo taken? Can't see the background too well but I assume it to be in VA. However it also looks like a lot of vistas I know from southern Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.

Barry Szamboti cue I am after would be ebony and ivory with 1 Bushka ring.
Very serious about it with three dealers actively looking.

The picture was on Skyline Drive in Virginia at a rest stop just south of the Big Meadow.
I have a better picture (pay no attention to the man on the bike - it is only me) of the bike at the following link under post 305.

Later,

It's a beauty of course, and I really like the veneer close-ups. It shows the care they used building the forearm.

I think it's interesting that todays shaft woods are so white compared to the woods being used even just 15 - 20 years ago. This is true of virtually all shaft re-makes.

The color is not just in the finish, it's in the wood. I've had old original shafts taken down to the bare wood and refinished, and the wood is not nearly as bright white as the wood today.

My guess is the probelm is that the trees are much smaller when harvested, and the heartwood is lighter in color than the outer growth.

It is not so obvious until shown side by side with the originals.

Gorgeous cue. Funny how the simplest of designs can be the most appealing. Gus's cues just jump out at you and exude quality and fine craftsmanship.

Yeah, great view from up there! Thanks for the reference to your other photo. You sure have a nice ride!

Also: http://www.cueaddicts.com/bszamboti.htm Here is a link to a Barry just as you describe (bottom cue). They are asking $4k. I tried to trade for that cue, but did not have any luck with what I was offering. The BB was the end result of all of that mess and I am happy now, though Szamboti-less.

I guess you will be going to Valley Forge to look there also.
