My new Titlest conversion - Well, in process

I'm having another conversion done. This cue started as a Willie Hoppe Pro. By the label, I believe it was made in the mid 1960s. The cue was originally 22 oz.

I asked Chad at CAM cues to complete this conversion for me. If anyone is thinking of having a cue made or a conversion (like me) I would recommend you at least consider Chad. He is a great guy to work with and is turning out a real nice cues.

The original shaft rolled straight on the lathe so Chad is going to use it and make me another shaft. I can't wait to find out how a 45 to 50 year old shaft hits! I'm going old school on this cue. If fact, I'm wanting to find some cortland. Wow is that stuff expensive, if you can find it.

I plan on keeping this thread updated as Chad does his magic. Chad only lives a couple of miles from me, so I will be snapping some pics and posting them.

Titlist Conversion

I have a few Titlist conversions and they are about my favorite cues.
One of these days I'll have this old Willie Hoppe cue I picked up converted so it's interesting to see what's out there.

The laminated piece is something Chad put in, I didn't request it. I'm not sure if this is common for Chad or not. You are seeing the entire piece. I just didn't get a good picture of it. To maintain the length of the cue, Chad had to put in about a 3 to 4 inch piece of wood. I don't know why he used laminated wood but I'm sure there is a good reason. I'll ask Chad next time I'm over there or maybe he will see this thread and comment. I think its great when the cuemakers get on here and talk about cuemaking. Anyway, here is another pic.

My guess is that laminated wood has considerably less chance of warpage.

Thanks for the information. I'm learning stuff everyday. So, do most cue makers use laminated wood for the handle that will be covered by a wrap?

Not to say that others don't....I've only seen straight grain maple, purpleheart and maybe a few other types of wood used for handles. First time seeing laminated but again, not to say that others don't use it....just haven't seen it.

I'm one of the lucky people, I've been real busy with work. So, I have not had time to keep up the pics on this tread. I talked with Chad on Tuesday. He said he would be putting the joint on this week and finish the shafts. I'll try to get over there tomorrow and snaps some pics and post them.

I could be mistaken but I believe hard oil finishes, shellacs and hand rubbed oils like tung oil etc...and I'm sure some were just finished with a wax coat.

Ok guys here are final pics of the cue
Steven and I went out and played one pocket last night until 2am it was fun, I don't get to play much anymore these days and have not played any one pocket in about a year or so I enjoyed it .

I had told Steven that I would take more pics than I did of the process but this is what I have .


the laminate is just what I grabbed I have used alot of laminate handles as well as maple .

Inlays are Ivory , butt cap is derlin ,shafts have a very nice snug tolerance fit into the pilot of stainless collar.

the shaft wood I used here steven picked out when he was over in the shop I believe the last taper dates on them where 2002 before I finished them out so they are 9-10 yrs old
