My next custom cue ?

Hello All:

I am still pretty new on the forums, to give you some background on myself, I have been playing eight ball for about 18 years, I bought my first custom cue about 4 years ago from a local cue maker here in Alberta. I still love playing with it, just feel like I should try something different, I have played with a few different productions cues, right now I have gone back to my old Falcon with an OB Classic, seems to hit pretty good, just still not the feel I was looking for. I hear good things about John Jack Madden cues and Prather, what else is out there that everyone could tell me.

Jim pierce, price vs quality is unmatched

Thanks, I will give a look, Every bit of input I can get, it very appreciated. When I was down at VNEA 2 weeks ago in Vegas, I could have bought a Dale Perry, for some reason my gut instinct kept telling me it would not be a good buy, especially for all the reviews I had seen about DP cues. Aside from the fact the guy was asking 300.00, US, then it got priced down to 240.00. Probably a good thing I did not buy it after all.

Jim pierce cues will give a dale Perry the breaks, 6 on the wire, bih, the 5 out, the end rail and still win a race to 7 ;D

My opinion of Jim Pierce cues can be summed up below..........

Needless to say, there are hundreds of better cuemakers to chose from.

Feel free to name one that can build the same quality for the same price. I won't hold my breath.

Isn't Diveney from up your way in Canada? If so, I'd certainly give him some thought. Heard nothing but great things about his cues.

Let me try again....1 more lost customer how many do you think you have counted for in the two years since your thread and sig line?

Thanks all, I appreciate the feedback, Diveney, never heard of him, I will check his work out. As far as Jim Pierce is concerned I still have to do my research and find out if he is the right cue maker for me, I will not judge anything based on someone else's experience but I take everything into consideration. For me it might take me a little longer to find the right cue maker, I have heard really good things about Jack Madden's cues, as I was reading apparently he just got back from surgery so if anyone would happen to know if he is up and running it would be appreciated. Please keep the info coming in because everything helps. Thanks again.

If you haven't heard of Diveney, do a lot more research before you buy a custom cue. A lot more. The forum search tool will help also to find other threads with members asking similar questions. I live in Canada also, if you want some tips you can call me. PM your # and we can chat. GL.

Gotta throw out my props for Jeff Olney. Absolutely LOVE mine and it was $850 with two shafts. Looks, playability, excellent hit, and good price. Will get my nod every time!

Pat Diveney lives in West Liberty Iowa...Class Act and one of the best out there. Bar none. Saw him last sunday in Davenport at Sharky's. He has helped me out w/cue repairs over and above what most would take on. He's the real deal...

I did end up checking out Divieney and realized he was in Iowa, He has a bunch of nice cues, I am thinking right now he might be a little out of my price range. Still worth a look. I appreciate the Jeff Olney info as well. Have to check into everything everyone gives me. Keep the info coming.

Can you give us a few more things to go on:

- How soon would you want to have your cue (weeks, couple months, 1-2 years)
- What kind of cue are you looking to get, simple or fancy
- Approximately how much would you like to spend as a maximum
- What kind of hit/play are you looking for, hard or soft, deflection no problem or has to be low deflection

gr. Dave

One thing for sure, I would like to get a new cue before the summer has come and gone and the new season has started, (Enough time to break the cue in), with my last custom, it was quite fancy, lots of inlays, different types of wood in the butt. So this time around I rather stay low key on the fancy. My max is 1000.00 dollars, anything over that and I am going to have a lot explaining to do to my wife! lastly since I have gotten use to a Low Deflection shaft then is what I will stick to, or if I can get the shaft turned down and the tip to about 12.2.

Some recommendations for your search....

If your budget is 1k my recommendations for customs would be (and not in any particular order)
Andy Gilbert
Tim Scruggs sneaky
Bob Frey (might be a little difficult to get one of his customs in the 1k range but it can be done)
Chris Nitti (my current cue and I love it. Check out my posts and see the pics. relatively fancy and I got it with two shafts for just over 1k)
Pat Diveney
Leon Sly
David Kikel (Kikel Cues)
Cory Barnhart
Ariel Carmeli
Mike Capone

Good luck with your search. There are a lot of great cuemakers out there that make fantastic cues that you can get into for 1k or less it just depends on your likes and how fancy you want/can get for your budget.

Let us know what you end up getting!

Thanks for the info, I think I have started to narrow my choices down, still tough but once I do decide then I will let everyone know. Thanks again.
