My one pocket match pic

To keep the pressure on you I would kick up table two rails and try to get you behind the 2 or 8, and try to get it close/frozen to the top rail. That would protect the balls in front of my pocket. I'm not a big fan of leaving the 1 straight in as that means you could pass that up and move the 3 and/or 12 out of my hole.

No way am I freezing you to the 3 and leavinng you a free shot to clear everything from my hole AND push more your way. Depending on how the cue ball fell on the 3, you might even have a pretty free shot at pocketing something in your hole. There are only 2 balls near my hole. You obviously want to push them both away. Not sure why I would freeze to the 3 FORCING your only shot to be moving the thing that I want to protect.

Also, the shot on the 1 from up table (near the 2) is really tough - especially with small pockets. And I would be betting that the reward of getting 1 ball is not enough to justify the risk of losing at least 3, but probably more, balls. In order for you to get more than 1 ball by shooting at the 1, you would have to hit it pretty firm. And that's even harder from the top rail.

you thin the three and send the cue ball one rail over near the one ball but below it.
this hides your hole from him. and leaves him low enough so he cant kick back into the two balls safe.

Leave the 3 ball right where it is. Bank the cue ball off the side rail and give opponent a straight in shot on the 1ball (as far away from the 1 as is possible but STRAIGHT IN.). (and take the foul for not hitting a ball).

This is what I would do. No way I'd move the 3.

Hmm. I like td's logic even more. I'd still take the foul and kick uptake off the long rail, but I would try to get snug to the 2.

That's not bad logic either, except...If you hit the 3 ball too thick, the cue ball may never reach the rail. If you hit the 3 ball too thin, the cue ball may hit the rail and bounce off leaving a "good" angle on the 1 ball and a chance for the opponent to run more than one ball.

I guess, it all depends upon how confident you are with any shot.

When you are in a difficult situation playing one pocket, it's all about mitigating the damage.

If you are successful in mitigating the damage, it was a good choice.

One other thing to consider: When you are very close to the table, able to look at the table from many different angles, other choices sometimes become apparent. That is one of the reasons you see players walk all the way around the table.

BTW, that was an excellent shot you made. Cliff Joyner would have been satisfied with that effort.

I agree. I was saying that I would not come off of the 3 at all for the reasons you mentioned but would take the foul and kick one rail up table near the 2.
