My Redone Mac Case

I posted this in the "For Sale" section but it probably belongs here.

This is my Special Edition Harley Mac Case.

From the conversation I had with the guy at McDermott, there were very few of these made.

I took off the old vinyl and put on a new leather cover. Turned out pretty good.

I haven't installed the latches and don't think I will as the lid fits very tight and has a good suction.

i love those cases.i ahve never had the harley one,but the Mac's in general are awesome cases.i just wish they made 2x4.

I know the Mac cases have an aluminum tube, whereas all the other cases of this style are made of a PVC extruded tube...is the aluminum heavier? It seems like it would be, but I have never seen a Mac case up close to be able to compare the weight between the two.

BTW...very nice job with the re-cover, and the seamwork is very good! Was it a PITA to remove the old leather? And how did you do it? I have a case here that I need to re-cover myself. :)

The Mac cases are heavier for sure but not as much as you think.

The old leather peeled off but it was a chore. The Aluminum makes it much easier as you can just sand it down to remove the glue after the old vinyl is gone.

Yeah, I have been worrying about the potential damage to the PVC that removing the leather will do...especially since I know that a very heavy-duty adhesive was used in the original installation of the leather. Doesn't make sense to remove the old leather if it is going to damage the PVC tube...and I do not mean cosmetically.

Then again...nothing ventured, nothing gained! :p

Lisa,
don't worry about damaging the PVC. Strip the old leather off and use Mineral spirits to dissolve the glue, don't sand.

Thats a really nice case. I've never heard of mac cases. Do they still make them? is there a dealer around? I tried to do a google search but all I came up with are cases for Apple Macintosh Laptos.

No, they are no longer made. McDermott made them years ago. They were only made in 1x2 sizes, but came in "regular" and "Super Mac" versions. :)

You can still find them every so often on ebay and I'm sure a few members here have them in their collections.

Here is my Super Mac with the vinyl off.
