My reflections on the Mosconi Cup

I missed " Scott ,the shot , Smith "
Oscar was GREAT
Thanks to everyone who posted the sites
I really enjoyed the Mosconi Cup

:clapping:

Oscar played really well. He was the most junior member of the team and probably the least experienced 'big event' player. How weak is that? if you are perceived as the weakest of a nation's 5 man team. If true-would that make you 'only' the 5th best player in the country? Not bad.

I think Oscar changed some European minds about his game. I think they said Oscar had beaten Ralph twice before at Turning Stone.

BTW -nice seats at the event. That had to be a lot of fun. Could you see over that row of 'Big-uns' in the front row?

Hands down, O was an integral part of this team. He never showed a lot of emotion and was everyone's rock. And besides, he was to us all what he was to Dennis. He's like this stuffed animal that you just want to hug and give a rub on the head to. He's like a younger Jay Helfert. They just light up the room. And O played VERY well. Corey was the one who looked like he spent a bit too many hours on the golf course......

Nice recap of your perspectives on the Cup, Jay. I've always liked your commentary but really thought you rose to new heights with your contribution to the feed at this event. In a couple of months you are going to be a TV star when this thing airs on Fox.

Jay already is a star everywhere outside America. He has been stellar for over 10 years since he came to Cardiff in 1999. America Awaits

Funny commentary faux pas

[...] and went overboard in her efforts to arouse the crowd. It helped a lot imo.

Jay:

You know something? This year's Mosconi Cup was loaded with very funny "commentary faux pas"!

  • From Jerry F.'s "It's tough to sit in your stool" (yes, I'd want to run to the rest room and change my britches at the next break!), to...
  • You, Jay, when instead of saying "He's going to shoot it to the other END of the table," you say, "He's going to take it in the END," to...
  • The bolded comment above, and probably others not even mentioned here...
...it was both an exciting and laugh-provoking event. Some of the stuff you, Jerry, and Jim were coming out with would cause a slightly winced-eyebrow expression, and then a giggle.

But all in fun. And, congratulations to our team notwithstanding, it was a very fun event thanks to you guys! GREAT JOB all around!

I got a solution to for the break...play 10 ball. Over and done. Then they can break the way they want.

I agree jay that it was a very good event. Its a shame that ESPN or any other sports reporting network didnt attend.

Is there anyway to buy the 4 days of video. Being there we cant hear the commentary and the interviews. I would love to buy a DVD of the actual broadcast.

I also was there 2 years ago and while it was heavily attended by the euros there was a reason. Ricky Hatton ( a euro boxing favorite) fought
Floyd Mayweather that week. I spoke with many euros that had gotten package deals to attend both events. Others found out about it while there in vegas and decided to attend.

I know that even in Vegas I would have tried everything possible to get some military to the event.

Hopefuly they will take a look at making the venue a bit bigger and at the seating. I love the pit style seating but theres no excuse for a poor view.
Many rows were on the same level and in a pit style venue that leads to
looking through and around those in front of you.

America played well. We received some fortunate breaks and I have to say that I dont think the Euro team played their best. Sometimes being the favorite adds to the pressure.

Oscar represented himself very well. I know I would start next years team
with Johnny, Dennis, Shane and probably Rodney. Its tough with only 5 spots but John Schmidt or Stevie Moore would be good as the fifth guy.
Nothing against Oscar but I do find the changes interesting.

Thanks for the report Jay

after the event to post your observations?

Is it a contractual issue or one of professional courtesy to the audience whereby you maintain your posture of reporter/commentator and not homer?

I'm guessing it is just another aspect of the truly professional job you do. Independent commentary in appearance and in fact.

Get some rest.

Thank you for your efforts.

I was very busy during the event and did not have easy access to a computer. They wanted $1 a minute (robbery!) in the business office of the MGM and my laptop was at home resting.

I was still getting over the time change as well. I felt like I was still on filipino time, going to sleep early (like at 7 or 8 PM) and getting up at three in the morning (and staying up). It is never an easy adjustment for me to make when I return from weeks in Asia.

I do make my observations about how I feel the event is going quite clear when I'm commentating. But one thing I do not do is pull for either side. First of all I consider all these players to be my friends and more important I do not want bias to cloud my observations.

I have no clause in my contract with SkySports that mandates that I must do anything, except be myself. They trust that I will do a good job of reporting what is going on and that's it. I am aware that there is a large (live) audience out there and I take care not to be offensive or profane. It is very different from working for Accu-Stats or TAR for that matter.

I know that I can be sarcastic to a certain degree, humorous if the situation presents itself and even contradictory of what I consider to be an error in shot selection or one made by the officials. But I must be careful not to over step my bounds. I'm not Norman Chad and don't want to be.

So Jerry and I are talking about how the Europeans prepared for the days matches. Jerry made a comment relating their preparation to something that Winston Churchill might do. My response to him was, "Churchill wasn't a pool player though." The director and producer laughed out loud at that one. Jerry shot back, "He could have been a good one." That got another laugh in our ears.

Jerry is so good at what he does that he makes it look easy. I can't tell you how many times I saw something about to happen and Jerry says it before me. He doesn't miss much.

I managed to catch part of the stream of the Mosconi Cup, and was happy to find Jay and Jerry broadcasting. It was such a pleasure to hear an actual, honest-to-god pool player doing the commentary, rather than someone who would be better suited to reporting the weather in Bumdiddle, Iowa (I'm looking at you, ESPN).

Another good job, Jay.

BTW, if you take 101 back to LA, stop by if you have time.

Funny commentary faux pas during Hatch-Feijen singles match

Jerry, after watching Hatch's 6-0 roasting of Feijen again, I realized I mis-attributed the quotes in my earlier post -- they were all from you, and all during that one match! In fact, your Winston Churchill comments were made, in that very match, with Jim Wych, not Jerry.

Methinks all of us need some sleep after this past week!

What we needed

Great job all around guys.Dennis, great player with alot of heart for a long time in case you didn't know. .....Rodney. Mr.Class all the way, no one has more then he does in the pool world. Tony Robles and Rodney Morris are what the game should be about and why we should take it to the next level with them as our leaders.Their class can get the neg. thoughts away from parents and bring this game to where it was and should be. So here's my thinking, a dvd of the Mosconi cup sent to school districts to show them the positive that pool has to offer, not like your back room hustle.
I say lets take advantage of what went down this past weekend and bring pool back to a main stream sport so kids can play without being hustled.
let me know your thoughts or am i just dreaming?

Thanks Jay for your insights on this very exciting match

Enjoyed every aspect of this match. Our youth league would get a huge positive moral boost if I could purchase a few copies of this event for Christmas gifts. All players on both teams showed what it means to be the best, to be champions. Yes our jr players need to experience this achievement by TEAM USA!

Great job, as usual and really entertaining!

I believe the exchange you mentioned below was with Jim Wych, not Jerry, however, but it's all a blur! EDIT: Just read sfleinen's post above who said the same thing!
