A little curly walnut!

It was a good day!

Looks nice. Also looks like a heavier wood. What would you compare it to?
Anyway, I'm sure it will make a nice forearm.

Terry,

I'll let Larry answer about his wood, but I picked up some fiddleback black walnut from a member here a while back and I am still surprised at how light it is!!

My 2 Cents,

Gary

I have some curly black walnut in my stash as well, it is an american hardwood, but not all that heavy. I would want to core it with a heavy purpleheart, or better: an impregnated plywood dowel to make it more stable, and also a bit heavier.
It is a beautiful wood, and I love being able to use American wood in my cues.

It is light for a hard wood. Just a tad lighter than maple. It is hard though and with this figure. It has a lot of stress. Can't cut it with my table saw. It just closes on the blade and stalls the saw out. Lucky for me I have a big band saw I am storing for a friend.

Theres a small fee for using that saw, payable in wood of course:D

I have some crotch cut walnut. It has some beautiful figure and some neat color streaks. Walnut is one of the lighter hardwoods. Wood-database.com lists Black Walnut as 41lbs/cubic foot and Sugar Maple as 44lbs/cubic foot. On the plus side, dried walnut is supposed to be more dimensionally stable than just about anything.

That's some beautiful lumber you have there. Have fun.

Have you seen any photos of how crotch cut walnut looks when turned? I am working with a gun-stock maker to get a chunk of some exhibition grade stuff, but have no idea how it will look when turned round. I can tell you this, the stuff ain't cheap! PM me if you have any photos.

Nice find Larry. I love the nice curly stuff. Do you plan to core it?

Scott

Yes it will be cored. Lots of stress in it and it will need some weight added!

I hope to get some turned round in the next few days. Will try to post some pictures.

My board had no where near the figure but turned out really nice.

Found it really hard to get pictures.
I can't wait to see how your boards look when turned - they are going to be amazing.

As you can see by those photos of a cue I wish was mine, crotch cut walnut looks even more interesting in cues than in gun stocks.

well, here's the piece I got today....still can't believe the figure in this stuff....it was sprayed with some finish to bring the grain out for photos....although not shown, there's a LOT of fiddleback grain on the edges of this piece that should really make it wild looking when it's turned round...wish this one had as good of curly to it as the OP's piece, but one can only jam so much grain patterning into a piece of wood this size...only enough here for a forearm though...14" x 3.5" x 2.5"....

depends on how you bust the block....if you go for going right down the middle to catch the center of the crotch, it's 1 forearm only.....if you don't mind splitting it down the crotch, then yeah, you could get two.....gonna have to debate this one a while I think....
