My toughest challenge

Pool? Never heard of it..

I know I can play well, and once I'm thoroughly warmed up and tell myself "Enough playing around, let's shoot some pool" I do quite well. The problem is, I have a tough time getting to that mental stage lately. I've had so much going on lately that my mental game just isn't there.

For some reason I've been over analyzing myself lately. This from the guy who's given a few lessons...I'm not really sure why and when I stop doing that and just PLAY, then I do quite well. That is, of course, until I realize I'm doing well and try to analyze my mental game, then I'm back to square one.

Oddly, with all the stress I've had lately, I feel like I've dropped in my level of play quite considerably. What should I do? I know I'm not the only one who deals with this situation, what's worked for you?

Do not try to bend the spoon; that's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth: There is no spoon. Then you will see, it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.

*edit* lol. I have the same problem that you describe, Im watching this thread but I already know that there is no secret road map to "the zone". I've found that if I focus on being "in the moment" and I don't allow negative self talk or frustration to enter my thoughts as Im finding my rhythm... I find it much more quickly.

If you need a confidence boost, stop checking yourself. Just stroke naturally, and pot on feel instead of analyzing every shot. Sure your form and stroke might be crappy (or may not be, idk. In my case it is when Im in the zone playing in high gear. I have a semi-sidearm stroke bc i'm barrel chested and cant pull my elbow in enough) but whatever works for you, works for you. Worry about technique building later. :D
