mystery cue ~ help i.d.

Mystery cue?

Dick, I was going to mention in my last post that the cue had the early Chicago look. Craig Peterson is high on the list in that area. If you look in the Blue book page 656, third cue down, built for Mosconi, notice the figuring on the forearm. I know Rambow felt straight grain maple was best, but this cue shows differently. Good luck. I am learning as I research and read the comments.

bumper & butt plate

Butt plate with the bumper removed.

Notice there is no provision to remove the weight bolt and the bolt and butt plate are perfectly flush as if they were machined together after the bolt was installed.

Using a strong magnet I could sense the weight bolt through the side of the cue but not a bolt at the "A" joint. If there is one it could be aluminum.

I have an old cue that I "rescued" from a local cuemaker's shop back in approx '89 or '90 that looks VERY similar.

I am in a military town so there are always guys coming from all over the country. A young Navy guy was in from Chicago, the cue had belonged to his grandfather & was just sitting in a closet for about 20 years. The local guy took it towards trade for another cue.

When I saw it there was an absolutely dead/dried up falling off leather wrap on it but I liked the points & the fact that it was "plain" (subtle beauty) and I always preferred the "old" cues - just liked the balance better than the newer cues.

Had it cleaned up & we put a light green wrap on it that really made the veneers "pop".

Mine is straight grain maple - no nylon insert - pin is also brass. I have a white bumper on it & can't remember what bumper was on it before.

Most people tell me it is either Rambow or Spain.

It is one of my daily players (along with my old Joss).I need to have my photographer friend take some photos & do some measuring.

Retraction

A picture of one of Hueblers first production cues should be posted with this showing the butt end. After noticing this I talked to Paul Huebler to discuss the early cues. His memory is not what it used to be, but he said he tried making piloted joints, but only for special orders. I asked him about duplicating the colors of titlists. He said he was able to do that. He only made a few. To authenticate would require him to see it. He will not work from photos or emails. At this point do not send it to him if you are to be sure to get it returned. He has no employees and has some trouble finding things. I will see him in the next month or two if any cues need to be taken to him.http://forums.azbilliards.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=103586&stc=1&d=1248212939

Maybe Marcus is correct and my cue is an early Huebler.

I assume from your post you spoke with Paul today. Did you happen to ask him about the double strand wrap or the plastic bumper?

If you are going to visit him I could ship the cue to you for his identification.

I've had the cue for several years not knowing what I have other than it is a very nice old cue. A positive i.d. would be great.

EVEN IF HE MADE IT, HE MAY NOT SAY THAT IT'S HIS.

I'VE NEVER SEEN A HUEBLER WITH THE DOUBLE WRAP, BUT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED.

THOSE PLASTIC BUMPERS I HAVE SEEN ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OLDER HOPPE STYLE CUES. MAYBE THEY WERE SOLD AS AN ADD-ON BY A SECONDARY COMPANY. I'VE EVEN HAD A FEW TITLISTS THAT HAD THAT SORT OF "BUMPER"

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH.

Marcus

I am bringing this back around to see if anyone found out who made this cue or who used that type of weight bolt and how do you remove it?
