Does anyone shoot NAPA? We just got it started around here and i really like it better than APA. I play APA, VNEA, and NAPA now and have to say I like NAPA the best. The races get a little crazy some times but overall its good.

been playing it for a year now..... i love it !!! i also play apa and a bcapl format money league.

there are others in town who also play all 3 leagues but i have to say the napa league overall has more higher level players than the other 2 leagues.

yea some races do get crazy. watched a 10-2 race last week lol.

we jockey around with sevsral formats each session. we have played just 8 ball. double jeapordy and laggers choice. just finished up last session with double jeapordy. new session starts next week and we are going back to laggers choice.

for those not aware , laggers choice means just what the name implies. whoever wins the lag makes the choice of what game to play. 8,9 or 10 ball.

since most people do not have the same handicap in each discipline the races would vary from one game to the other.

say 2 people match up. it could be a 4-4 race in 8 ball, a 5-3 race in 9 ball or a 4-5 race in 10 ball. you would pick which discipline you felt you had the best chance of winning.

laggers choice had a whole new deminsion to matching up opponents .

in apa you just worry about matching up your 5 against their 5 or whatever. in laggers choice tou worry about matching up 60 in 8 ball- 50 in 9 ball and 45 in 10 ball against their 70 in 8 ball- 60 in 9 ball and 50 in 10 ball and hope your player wins the lag so you can decide what game he has the best chance to win.

145 looks and no comments ?

while i love playing apa and my bcapl format money league i honestly think napa is the best league out there. especially for serious players. to me it combines the best of what apa and bcapl has to offer.

the rules are similar to bcapl but its a race to your handicap like apa. no counting balls like bcapl 8 ball or apa 9 ball.

its the best league out there in my opinion. i will be at the nationals during the southern classic, holler at me.:grin-square:

you can get any information about any members stats youwant on their website.

i looked up the number 1 ranked player in napa and saw a name many people on this forum are familiar with, actually 2. jason kirkwood and alex olinger. jasonis ranked numder 1 in both 8 and 9 ball and alex is ranked number 2 in 9 ball.

it also showed their win %. nunber of break an runs, 8 on break etc etc.

on apa site you can only look up stats for people on your team. you cannot look up stats for any other members, that sucks.not sure how bcapl website is , i never look since i am not a member but i do play a money league using the bcapl format.

That's really cool. I wish I could look up more stats of people on the APA site. In our area, we can look at anybody playing under our LO. It comes in handy when I want to see when my friends are playing at the bar or who their opponents are.

i can do the same . i can look up every team in every division " 14 divisions" and look up their rostersand when and where they play . i am just not able to look up any stats on anyone except the players on each team i play on. looking at everyones stats would come in handy during playoffs

i can get an idea of how strong some players are by looking up the top gun brackets though.

We have the NAPA around here. I love it. Pretty decent players in our area. Format one of the best I have seen.

NAPA has a terrific handicap system, compared to that of the APA. It's a great pool league.

The handicap is a lot tougher, and you can't cheat like you can in the APA because they don't count defensive shots and safeties, which rarely ever get marked correctly to begin with.

They have a terrific website too which always gets updated on time. The website has a million different stats that they keep for every player.

It's a terrific pool league, and is definitely going to give the APA a run for its money pretty soon once it gets a little bigger.

you are not kidding about the number of different stats they display on the website.

from where you rank localy to where you rank nationaly. your win % each season. yoer best record of matches won in a row , your worse record on matches lost in a row. win % against men, win % against women. and on and on and on.

the best part about that is you can see every stat for every napa member nationwide.

the widest range of handicaps i have ever seen. we have every body from a 15 to a 120 handicap. the scorekeeping is easy as heck.

and regarding the level of players. napa has the largest majority of strong players vs any other league in our area.

I think. NAPA is definitely the best league going. They are doing a lot of things right. I'm not a fan of any handicapping but their system is very good.

It's far from perfect though. I was talking to a guy that is in it tonight. He is a B- player. Because they put him up against a guy that just can't play for the last two weeks, he won every game and got jumped up quite a bit. This week, he had to spot an A player!! Needless to say, he's not too thrilled with it. He did state that they told him you have to be in it for about two years before your real handicapp is about right.

They have a ridiculous number of stats on the national site all right.

The national rankings are really cool too. I haven't played in that league in almost 1 year, but I was ranked around 25 nationwide in 8-ball.

You're always going to have those types of problems with any handicap system. I've had the same problem. I was one of their grand master players, ranked about 25 in the nation, and I had to give some ridiculous spots to a few players who played way better than their skill levels indicated. The race was like 9 to 3, and I had no chance to win.

The most common problem is that unestablished players often come in with a skill level way lower than their actual ability by default. The League Operator can't micromanage everybody or test their skill levels to prevent this sort of thing from happening. It's frustrating, but that's just the nature of handicapped pool.

I think their handicap system is excellent, overall. It's about as good as you can get. Usually, I would win when I would spot a bunch of games.

That's not the problem with the NAPA handicap system. The problem is this: It offers 10-2 races to the weak players on Thursday night when you have to be at work the next morning. This causes the top players in the local areas to not want to play. The few that do play are punished but an out of control upward spiral in handicap. In a few years there will be people in my local area that are average 6 APA handicaps but their NAPA handicap will be in the 130s. We already have a few that are over 110 but can play in our more competitive leagues as a 5. These are guys that have no chance in the open/Regular divisions of more established leagues, yet they are Grand Masters in NAPA. It's ridiculous at best.

The people at the top Know the system is not good for competition. They have come up with a completely new matrix for the 2013 Nationals. The most you can get spotted in the tournament now is 2 games on the wire. At Least by making this change they have in effect admitted that the old system didn't work. Hopefully this new matrix will find it's way into the everyday league.

This is the only league I've ever been in that was bottom heavy. The weaker players have the nuts in every match. If you can run an occasional rack you are doomed to trying to outrun the nuts every week.

Flame away I guess. This is my Honest Opinion based on 4 sessions in this league. Our local chapter is the weakest player base I have ever seen in any league in my 30+ years of playing pool. I think this is due to the above reasons. This weak player base causes a lot of the problems with the handicaps. The system may have less glaring flaws in a larger player base with better quality players.

Are you sure about that ??
I can lookup any member I want to in the entire(local) league , let alone just my division. Perhaps its up to the LO, or captn's & co captn's can see.

For the record: I like the NAPA league set-up, a lot less sandbagging too I have noticed. Sadly the closest league is 90 min away (1 way) .
