Thanks Paul. Keep up the good work. 25-23 loss to Diab must have been exciting.

I agree. But..... the new USBA website will eliminate this problem. As it is right now...only 3 people have access to the USBA website for posting info(other than the forum);

Jim Shovak, Jim Shovak, and Jim Shovak.

This scary Zensteve and RatF@@Ker agree about something.

But you wonder... when USBA will join FaceBook as so many other associations have? Its Free!!!

Yes Paul have update chart... www.professorqball.com

Maybe another idea would be, not to have directors play in the tournaments, so they can attend to USBA business at hand! The board should be promoting the game, not themselves! Everyone can't be a Queen Bee; an organized environment needs workers also.

I understand the reality of being a director on the board, no one gets paid for their efforts, and all things take time, but this event has been in the works for a year. Not to have Live Streaming is bad enough, but not to have bi-daily results of the event is really sad. I’m sure there are many of the directors there who have laptops, I pads, or smart phones to relay some kind of info during the tournament.

I want to be perfectly clear here; my comments are NO way intended or directed toward Paul Frankel, He is a tireless promoter and supporter of the game, but, He is only one man, and this is the USBA National Championship. This is supposed to be the most prestigious tournament the USBA holds all year, we need to start treating it as such; it only comes around once a year. How are we to promote NEW players to the game if we can’t expose it to the masses via the electronic age? The spectators that will most likely show up will be the players themselves and relatives, and die a hard billiard players, that is not enough; once again we need New blood to for the GREAT game to survive.

I don’t have all the answers, but I think I have some valid ideas.

Well said, Bill. Paul works his xxx off as well as supporting the USBA by playing in the event. It will be a great surprise if anything is different next year.

Hey Guys, I am trying to post as much as I can while I am sleeping.
I don't have much time and I will do my best.
Keep an eye on www.professorqball.com for more info and daily chart updates.

YOU GET TO SLEEP ????? ha ha ha YOUR JOB IS TO DO CARD TRICKS NOT TO POST THE RESULTS AS IT IS HAPPENING....THAT JOB THE USBA SHOULD BE DOING TO SAY NOTHING OF CREATING A VIDEO RECORD OF THE EVENT....or are you the only one doing that also? :frown::p:rolleyes:

I agree with Dieckman Post and Mr3Cushion Post...TAP...TAP...TAP

Straight Foward statements

Guys....I have no interest in debating who should be responsible for ______, who shouldn't play in the tournament because _______, who works their ______ off etc...

These perceptions or beliefs are real to you and you own them. So disputing them would be like pissing in the wind.

Just keep this in mind. There are people that work tirelessly behind the scenes that may not be know to many or some of you and frankly don't want the credit or adulation.

Also...any ideas coming from our members (or non-members) should be listened to and considered....but if there is a real shortage...it's not in ideas given...but on the ground, in the trenches work that needs to be done by volunteers.

The second day of the preliminaries concluded at the USBA Three Cushion National Championship in Las Vegas without any major surprises.

In flight A, Pedro Piedrabuena, appears to be in top form as he began the defense of his 2011 crown. His hardest matches remain to be played on the last day of the opening round. Both Gary Cohen and Kahlil Diab stand at 3 to 1 and hope to challenge Piedrabuena. Gilbert Najm suffered a few tough losses early but rebounded with a strong victory over Cohen. Playing well in the group is Paul Frankel, who has a victory over Najm and two close losses to Cohen and Diab.

Mazin Shooni and Gary Elias are both undefeated in Group B with two games to be played. They’ll play each other in the last game of the third day. A step behind at 3-1 is Victor Cuzzi. All three should advance to the semi finals.

The top of the class in Group C is Miguel Torres, who sports a 4-0 record. Peter Banyai and Lupe Cruz have one loss each and look to advance to the semi-finals, although Jamil Israel has an outside shot if he can knock out Cruz.

No player has emerged as the clear favorite in Group D. Michael Kang, Dung Nguyen and Jim Hendrickson all have 3 wins and 1 loss. Mark Hansen at 2-2 is a neck behind as the players hit the home stretch. The spectators and rail birds have been impressed with the play of Nguyen, a young player from Houston who lost in the 2 hole to Kang.

Another young Vietnamese-American player from Houston has fought his way to the top of Group E. Thanh Vu stands at 4 wins and no defeats entering the last day. He dispatched the wily Frank Torres 25 to 22 in a great match. Torres and Tom Rossman are both 3-1. Rossman may have the tougher road as he has yet to face Torres. Hoping to break into the semi-finals is Carlos Bazo, who has 2 wins and the same number of loses.

A couple of seasoned veterans from New York head the pack in Group F. Hugo Patino and Sunny Cho are both 4 – 0. They’ll play each other in the opening round on day three. Third place is still up for grabs. Jim Shovak, Robert Ferrara and Tony Ferrara are all in the running. The game between Shovak and the younger Ferrara (Tony) will be critical.

Jae Cho looks like he has regained the form that earned him the 2010 national championship. He has not been challenged. None of his opponents has scored more than 11 points against him. Fred Lamars likely secured a spot in the semi-finals with a tight 25 to 23 over Joe DeAmato. DeAmato led the entire game but Lamars closed it out with a run of 3.

Played on 8 new Gabriels Elements tables set out in the Cohiba Room at the Tropicana Hotel on the Vegas Strip, the USBA nationals will continue with the semi-final rounds tomorrow. Twenty players will advance to the semis, and 8 will then move to the finals, which will be played on Thursday.

Special Report from USBA Directors to Professor-Q-Ball. More reports to follow later today and throughout the semi-finals and finals.

Le Renard Égyptien has done it again, shocking 4-time champion Pedro Piedrabuena with a convincing 25 to 17 win. When it was over, the crowd stood on its feet and gave Khalil Diab a rousing round of applause. Some in the crowd were heard to whisper the nickname Diab had earned (so it was rumored) in the smoky, back alley balkline clubs of Cairo in the 1960s: Le Renard (the Fox). With the win, Diab secured a spot in the semi-finals. Whether he wins his flight and secures one of the top seeds in the next round remains to be seen.

Twenty players will advance to the semi-finals, where they will be placed in flights of 5. The players will be seeded based on their performance in the preliminaries. Even with the blemish on his record, Piedrabuena may still be one of the top seeds in the semi-finals if Diab falters against always-dangerous Gary Cohen. Sonny Cho earned one of the top seeds when he defeated Hugo Patino 25 to 17. Unless upsets occur in their last match of the preliminaries, other likely top seeds in the semis will be Jae Cho, Miguel Torres and Thanh Vu. Other seeds are up for grabs.

The semi-finals will be played tomorrow, and the finals will start and finish on Thursday.

More later.

The preliminaries are over, and the field of the USBA nationals has been whittled to 20 semi-finalists, who will begin play tomorrow in flights of 5. From the 20 semi-finalists, two from each flight will move on to the finals.

The preliminaries ended with great drama as the hound caught the fox. Gary Cohen bested Khalil Diab 25 to 21 with a marvelous snake shot along the short rail for the final point. With the win, Cohen advanced to the semis, as Diab. Tony Ferrara, a young player from New England, waited anxiously for the outcome. A win by Diab would mean Ferrara was in the semis. A win by Cohen would end Ferrara’s tournament. When Cohen’s last shot spun off the rail and kissed the second object ball, Tony put away his cue.

The highest seed in the semis went to Mazin Shooni, who posted a 6-0 record and had the fewest points scored by his opponents (71). Sonny Cho and Miguel Torres were seeded second and third, respectively, with identical 6-0 records. Frank Torres received the other top seed, with a 5-1 record. Second seeds went to Michael Kang , Jae Cho , Pedro Piedrabuena and Thanh Vu (all 5-1). Hugo Patino, Lupe Cruz, Jim Henrickson and Fred Lamers were seeded third. Fourth seeds have been awarded to Khalil Diab, Victor Cuzzi, Peter Banyai and Joe DeAmato. Fifth seeds were given to Gary Elias, Gary Cohen, Tom Rossman and Dung Nguyen. Left on the bubble was Tony Ferrara, who finished 3-3 and third in his flight but ended up the 21st ranked player.

Semi-Final Flights:

Flight A Mazin Shooni, Thanh Vu, Hugo P[atino, Joe DeAmato, Gary Elias

Flight B Sonny Cho, Pedro Piedrabuena, Lupe Cruz, Peter Banyai, Gary Cohen

Flight C Miguel Torres, Jae Cho, Jim Henrickson, Victor Cuzzi, Tom Rossman

Flight D Frank Torres, Michael Kang, Fred Lamers, Khalil Diab, Dung Nguyen.

All semi-finalists win prize money. The overall prize money to be awarded is $20,600, with the winner guaranteed $4,000.
