I have a cue (i will not mention name at this time), that has a problem...If i take the butt of the cue and roll it on the table (pool table or kitchen table)the joint and pin lift off the table about a 1/16 of an inch..But when i put the shaft on the cue (either shaft) the cue rolls str8..The cue also sights str8..How can this be? The wrap and butt plate dont seem to come into play...Any ideas? Thanks....Don

What is a compound taper..

Not sure...All i know is the cue lifts off the table in the same spot..About 1/3 of the way around the joint...Don

this has been somewhat of a controversial topic before, but sometimes the table might not be perfectly flat or the wrap could cause a little lift or the compound taper can cause it as well.i have seen cues that were dead straight when run off centers in a lathe, but rolled funny on a pool table.some here will say that it is impossible and rolling it on a table is the best way to check straightness, but i think the lathe is the best way to tell.i am not big on rolling them as the only method of testing straightness.it is a good starting point though.

i have bought and sold several SW that did the exact same thing, and most people that know SW's are aware of this.they too have a compound taper and sometimes just don't roll right.

Have you contacted the Cue maker to find out his opinion?
Did you buy it new or second hand?

Another reason for a Que to be straight but not to roll correctly , is if the cue is not dynamically balanced. If there is something in the wood selection or if the weight is not dead on centre, This can cause a cue to effective wobble on the table . The test for this condition is the faster it wobbles the greater the run out appears. If rolled very slowly then no run out is visible.

This will not make the tip of the cue come off the table...
It almost sounds like the cue is not consentric..

the tip isn't coming off the table.only the joint, but i am not sure the balance would make it raise up either.

Thanks

Thanks for all the info..I have sent the cue back to the cue maker and hope to hear from him soon...I will put the findings on here when i get them from the maker...Thanks...Don

Also, another aspect to take in consideration...... If the joint pin is off center as well as the insert or threaded hole and the offset centers are exactly 180 degrees opposite of each other, than that can also counter the warp and cause the cue to roll straight when it's assembled....

This doesn't happen too often but can be a factor in the equation.... I have experienced this several times in the past in my 18 yrs. of doing this professionally...

Is the cue a Bender?

If there is any wobble in the cue then the shaft, the butt, or both were either not turned concentric or one or both or the wrap has not been done correctly immaterial if the tip stays on the table or not. It is very easy to tune a warped butt or shaft so that the tip will consistently roll true. If the pin or the insert were not put in the center and the cue maker doesn't know how to properly turn the shaft to compensate, you will get this. It all boils down to either a warp somewhere or builder error, IMO.
