ok,
(please correct me if i get any terminology wrong)
very recently, I got ahold of my dad's old pool cue (he died when i was very young and my grandfather took it, he finally gave it to me). but here is the deal, i can't see a brand or anything on it.

the unique thing on it though is the shaft...or more importantly, the joint. The shaft is warped very badly (i dont know how it got that way). It is bad enough that i believe that i need a new shaft for it.

Now for the really odd part....the shaft has the male adapter on it, so that the shaft screws into the handle, instead of the other way around.

is there a term for this, or am i going to have to go to a custom cue maker to get a new shaft?

i will post pictures of the shaft etc... whenever i get back to my dorm tonight.

thanks for any information given

Talk to Ryan(?) Ratcues

He'll get you set up at a good price..

well guys,
i have one picture, and it isn't a good picture for my question, it is just an overall picture. i appologize for the crappy cell phone pic.

anyways, what is the best way for me to go about identifying this cue as to maker, etc....

the thread on the handle was put on by my Dad before he died, it is fishing rod eye wrapping thread (he used to make fishing rods and used the same technique). the weird pattern on the exposed wood parts are carved (possibly?), or it is wood burning (that is what it looks like to me), again, this is something that my dad probably did. i know for a fact the the thread was done by him, just not the carving.

I do realize that this cue is probably worth next to nothing, except for sentimental value, but i would love to know if it does (miraculously) have some sort of value to it

The cue is priceless don't do a thing to it.
Have a cue maker make a shaft from scratch, keep the original.
I can only wish I had something from my dad and grandfather.

i always planned on having a brand new shaft made for it
(kind of dreading the price on that, i have been playing with my first cue that i have bought (a players brand, better than house, but not near as good as some of the customs here).
the other will be stored with it as well, so i can keep the full cue together (oh, my grandfather also has one somewhere, he brought it back from japan when he was in the navy, i have never seen it, just heard about it)

i am really wondering about the joint though, as i showed it to someone today (not a cue maker, but a friend of one), and he said he hadn't seen another like the cue.

could whoever i have make a new shaft for it put the red and black band that is seen in the pic on it as well (i am pretty sure it is paint though)?

Don't worry bout a thing. Contact Ryan and he will take care of you. I believe he does Seybert's repair work. Your heirloom is in good hands with him.

Oh and for your information, some of the most revered cue makers in history used fishing line for wraps. :)

A little correction Randy.
Ryan works for Mueller's
I do the cue work for Seyberts.
KJ

My apologies. Either KJ or Ryan would be my choice, as both have very good reputations and many years of experience doing exactly what you need.

they really used rod wrap?
cool
i know that i dad put it on because my uncle remembers it. i will have some somewhat better pics up tonight and within the week, some really good pictures(though these will be through a photo website because of the size).

what i truly want is a brand on it...or origins of who made it if it was a custom maker

PS: could you recommend a cue maker w/in a few hr of me, I am alittle paranoid with shipping this cue, I would rather hand deliver

What part of japan was he in and what year. i might know the guy he bought that cue from.

the cue you're looking to get a shaft for here isn't really worth a whole lot. i've seen them before at sporting good stores. don't take it the wrong way it's from your grandfather so it's worth something. just not in the traditional cue flipper resale kind of way

if you really want it done, like others on here have said, you should send it to Ryan from muellers. a friend of mine had a similar situation and that's who he went to to take care of it

Cortland was fishing line and is still HIGHLY sought after.

I know of noone else as capable as those two and don't know anyone NEAR you.

I really wouldn't worry about shipping. You should be good with overnight shipping or, if you really want it safe....registered.

i wish i knew what part of japan he was in or when for that matter (as i can't remember)

now then, i have better pictures of the cue, if anyone can give me some more information i would definitely appreciate it, there is also a better picture of the joint, so you can get a better look at it and (hopefully) tell me more about it

also, can anyone tell me what the silver rings are for

Your cue has sentamental value, but was sold for a few dollars. It was made in either Japan or the Philipines, by the thousands. The cue is made of a wood named Ramin Wood. It is a poor wood for pool cues. You can still buy them for as little as $25. A new shaft will cost you $100 or more. The wrap on all that I have seen, is not Cortland fishing line, but cheap, nylon. Keep it as a momento of your family, but it's not worth spending the money to have a new shaft made. It's a poor playing cue, even with a new Maple shaft...JER

I was told by my uncle that my Dad was the one that put the wrap on it, and knowing my uncle as i do, i believe him....i hope

i will probably still end up getting a new shaft made, since i would like to be able to shoot with it again. how hard is it to find the joints like this?

also, does anyone know approximately when it was made?

I understand there is some sentimental value, but money wise, it is worthless. The cue is not unique. More like e pluribus unum. Sorry. It has been in production for years. It is probably still in production.
