I am looking at buying a new book instructional material.
I was looking at “The Pro book” (my first choice) or maybe one of those IPAT DVD series 2 or 3.
Has anyone tried theses?
What are your thoughts (worth the cost)?

Advanced Pro Book is better than the Pro Book. Neither video is getting much play.
IPAT DVD's are better but still don't get that much play.

Capelle’s books are good: Practicing Pool Book, Play Your Best Pool, Play Your Best 9 Ball.

I like VEPS DVD and I'm waiting for VEPP.

i haven't seen anything better than jimmy reids stuff. almost all i know, or something like that, and i've seen most that are out there.

What sorts of things are you looking to learn? What is your current level? What sort of shots do you have trouble with?

If you play mostly one game you could get a book about that. Do you have a favorite game?

If there is a Barnes & Noble near you, check out their pool books which are usually filed under Games with chess and sudoku. See if your local library has anything. Then buy what looks interesting to you.

Ipat

IPAT is great. If you buy the book buy the DVD also. I would suggest you start with PAT1 unless you are a Pro or Open player. PAT2 is brutal and PAT3 is Thorsten level drills.

Sorry, never heard of Jimmy Reid.
Did a search and see he is an instructor & has some DVD's.
Maybe that somehting I will look into later.

My level:
I am currently an A player in WI.
I feel very close to breaking though and winning my division and getting bumped up to AA.
I only play 8 and 9 ball.

I am one who needs to train smarter, not longer. I only have so much time.
I am sure we are in that same boat :)

Anyway, I was looking to get more information.

I do already have the basic books, mind for pool, play your best 9 ball, eight ball bible, percsion pool, etc...

I was looking for somehting a little more advanced and thus why I was looking at the books I listed.

If you are looking for drills, go with the new vepp's or ipat. If you are looking for high level instructional go with jimmy reid's stuff.

And fwiw, if you dont have the time to invest in practicing/playing, then no book or video will really help you.

World Catalog at your Library

Your local library has a computer assisted process to get book loans from what is called the World Catalog.

That is if any pool book, or other topic book, is available in a quantity of say 50 or more, you will probably receive that book. My library calls me when they come in.

English, French, Italian books are also available and can be understood by way of the diagrams or typing in phrases into Google Language Services.

Book loans are typically 2 weeks, and overdue fines are a bit higher.

Rare books are another matter and are likely to be listed but not loaned.

I have borrowed about 50 or so pool books and an even higher number of other topic books. I read everything.

It is a great resource. Look into it.

Then the main thing you have to do first is figure out what you are doing wrong. No one here can tell you what that is. Make a note of which shots give you trouble in practice or even better in competition. Where do you make your mistakes? Once you know that, you can figure out how to practice to fix the problem.

It's possible that there is something wrong with your fundamental mechanics that needs to be fixed. That's harder to self-diagnose, but you might be able to do it by video-recording yourself. A good instructor might be required for video analysis if you can't spot problems yourself.

I am a strong believer in the PAT series of books and dvds. The books and dvd's definitely need to be bought together to gain the full benefit of the PAT system.

And even at your level of play, I wouls still suggest that you start at PAT 1. Just because it will give you the best means to measure where your strenghts and weaknesses lay in your fundamentals before you start dealing with PAT 2 and 3. Because PAT 2 and 3 can be real killer in terms of the drill diffulculty offered in those tests.

So start with PAT 1 and test yourself. If your scores on each drill meet or exceed 80% of each drill's max score, then move on to PAT 2. But if your scoring anything less than 80%+ on any PAT 1 drill then you have problem areas in your skill set that need to be worked on. That's a big part of what the PAT system does for the player.

You can purchase the PAT books and DVD's from Bebob publishing. Seybert's is offering a great sale on the PAT 2 & 3 dvds. But are out of stock on the PAT 1 dvd.

The Pat-DVD incl it s tests are for sure good. But it is definitley not a system *to learn* or kind of pure instrucional material. Pat is something to bring kind of competition into serious practice- and you can see results doing a test.

The drills where you can work on towards a PAT Test are all good- but here, in my opinion, an instructor or a knowledged guy should guide and show you the correct drills and how to play them correct.

Truthfully Dr. Dave web site and DVDs are the best i have seen that describe it all; i am sure other material i have not seen are probably good too. Main thing do not ignore details that you think it is not relevant, think about everything written or said. At the end to be a master in pool, you have to experiment with pocketing every shot possible on the table with every possible angle, english, CB speed, bridge length, and elevation, and do the same for banks, sorry it is too much possibilities if you consider the distance change for practice between OB and CB 1/2 diamond and between CB and rails also 1/2 diamond and angle say 15 degrees each shot. Before you do anything test your cue stick and know how it deflect at all speeds and english. I guarantee you being an A player will do all of that in one month or even less 2-3 hrs a day, or even one week, you might be missing that little knowledge or secret only. Focus on where to aim before you go down on the shot, and trust you aim no matter what, it should be last thing to change if you missed. Good luck.
