Need Book Recommendations - Road Stories

Most have not read it. I have.

You must have a copy for sale. Used, on ebay. For 200$.

That book reads like it was written by a 5th grader and was printed using play-dough and marker ink and a few snorts of dishwasher powder.

I am a fast reader and it was so poor, took me nearly 8mos to force my way through it.

In reality, that book wouldn't be worth 20$.
In the pool world, it somehow rose to a hundred+.

Funny world.

Totally disagree. Admittedly the writing's not all that great, and it's way too expensive because of the short print run, but if you can get past those obstacles it's full of anecdotes about pretty nearly every player of any note whom Buddy matched up against in his prime, and it's highly entertaining. The story about "Geese" down in New Orleans is worth the price of the book alone.** I knew Geese, and brother, does that story ever ring true.

** (Okay, maybe not the current insanely high asking price, but certainly the original $20 or $25 list price.)

McGoorty would be my number one suggestion. You can get it as an ebook from Amazon or Barnes and Noble or get a paper cover copy.

I will second that. We bought the book and I was reading it to my wife in the bedroom while the kids were watching tv. She made peanut butter sandwiches before I started the reading. It was not long before the kids were at the door wanting to know what was so funny about those sandwiches.:grin-square:

I believe that. Not too many books have been written that are funny enough to make me literally laugh out loud. McGoorty is one of the few. I need to dig out my copy for a re-read since it has been over 10 years since I finished it.

While I agree that the stories are entertaining, the book can be VERY hard to read due to apparently different printing on the individual signatures, or groups of pages, throughout the book. I worked in a book bindery for 27 years and how a mess like that ever got out the door is beyond me. I haven't looked at my copy in several years now and it would be harder for me to read today than the last time I read it. I got my copy on Ebay for $35.00 and am glad I did. Signed by both Buddy and Woody.

I read Pool Wars as a ebook download (it was awesome), but couldn't find Pool Wars 2 in the same format. Jay, any input on this?

Also, someone mentioned Bet High and Kiss Low by Grady Matthews. I've always heard that it A. has a lot of dirty stories and B. isn't particularly well written, but I would still like to find a copy without paying an arm and a leg if anyone knows how.

More Pool Wars will some day be available as an ebook, but not quite yet.

For long flights I take a Kindle Fire HD 10 and a portable battery pack (20$). It will recharge your Kindle and your phone if needed. The Kindle automatically downloads recent movies to watch offline(called "on deck"). Amazon has a good selection of Pool books you can buy and download. E-books are cheaper to buy then real books. No need to carry a pile of books around. I download YouTube pool vids to watch offline. If you have Showtime or HBO you can download movies from their apps. On my last trip I took along my hearing protection earmuffs( Chainsaw use) and wore over my earbuds, worked perfect to stop the jet engine noise and crying babies.

as for as the writting, Buddy was a pool player
not an English Prof. at a college

Winning One Pocket
has some of the best road/gambling stories ever published
along with the opinions of some of the World's Best One Pocket Players
about what the correct shot or move is.
(yes, it is expensive--in my opinion--worth every penny)
it is a Collectable book...
