Need help with new cue

I know their are a lot of threads of people asking for new cues and such, but I 'm making one anyway. I am a relatively new player, but I am very serious about getting better. I don't want to spend over $150 on a cue, because I mainly only play on 7ft bar tables and the occasional 9ft'er every now and then. I am pretty decent, but then again I only play on a 7ft table most of the time and anyone can play on one of those. Anyway, back to my point. I really like Sneaky Pete's. I was wondering what the best sneaky pete is for around $100? I had a player's sneaky pete, but didn't like the hit. My friend has a Lucasi and I do like it much better. I have no where to go to test cues as I live in WV and there are no pool halls anywhere around. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a Sterling Sneaky Pete at my local billiard supply store that plays great. Paid only $53 for it. I'm currently using it for a Break Cue but it plays just fine too. If you're not dead set on a sneaky pete, I would suggest a low end Mcdermott with a wood to wood joint. You won't find a more solid hitting cue than a Mcdermott.

What part of the former "wild and wonderful" but now "open for business" state are you in? I bet Jay at TJ's billiards in Huntington has an uncountable number of cues, and he may be willing to let you hit with a few... but knowing him, he'll probably charge you a testers fee. :) They also have some Mcdermotts there but, I don't really know about their selection.

I think just about all the "decent"(I use this term loosely) players @ TJ's play with some sort of sneaky pete, they may be able to point you in the right direction... as I think a lot are made by a local cue maker that frequents the Pool Hall. Might be able to have a custom shaft made for a pre-existing butt somewhere in your price range.

For a hundred bucks, I'd probably look for an old stock dufferin SP or conversion of sorts. I just bought a Dufferin 2 piece old stock cue w/ case for thirty bucks on ebay... Its certainly nowhere close to being in the same league as my Frey SP or my Jacoby... but it is the best bang for my bucks that I can imagine. Just wanted something to take with me to the bars when I go out with friends while visiting home, as I don't drink... just like to shoot pool, and there are no pool halls in my hometown.

I am a good ways from Huntington. I live about 20 miles south of Morgantown. I think their is a pool hall in Morgantown, but I don't want to drive up there just to test out some cues. Any links to a Dufferin sneaky?

dufferin cue on ebay

Not a sneaky pete. But its the same Dufferin cue I bought used for thirty bucks w/ case. Shoots well. It has a weird joint, but don't let it turn you off. There's enough dufferin's out there, it shouldn't be too hard to find a SP or conversion of sorts that is if your really want a SP.

I'd also check out these Mcdermotts.

If you don't like the hit of the Players cue try changing the tip. There is a good chance the tip change will improve the hit. Try Lepro or Morri.

I think Le Pro's come on a players cue... could be wrong tho... In anycase, there's wide margin of tip quality between a le pro and a Moori, JMHO. :)

Whatever you pick, just remember its the player that makes the cue; the cue doesn't make the player. Didn't Efren play w/ a ten dollar cue or something when he first came to the US? Of course, he could be using a piece of yarn and w/ me using a Bushka... and I still wouldn't make it to the table.

My Player's had a LePro tip on it. It is broke now. I was using it to break and the ferrule cracked. I have some sort of Viper Pro Series now that someone gave to me and I hate it. The shaft is sticky, and feels like it has no taper. A friend of mine has a $1300 Jacoby that feels like the shaft is a pencil. I really like the taper on it. Any cheap Jacoby's out there?

Fairly expensive for a plain black stained cue. Why is this?

Its the fact that its a custom cue and not assembly line. It is hand made.

You should post in the wanted/for sale section. See if there is anything used out there along with new. Thats your best bet.

Are Action cues nice? I saw some decent looking ones on billiardwarehouse for $80. I liked the look, but who knows how good they are.

I think that is your best bet as well...

I am seriously considering these, but I don't really care for the looks. I also noticed in another thread the Dominiak cues. I don't want to custom order one because of how long it may take, but if someone had one I'd definitely like to have one of these. I've heard nothing bad about them on these forums.

I actually like the look of this Dufferin

Is it the best cue in this range for the price?

FWIW, Dufferin cues was bought out by a Chinese company a few years back. If you are going to get a Dufferin, you want to find a pre-chinese Dufferin - one made in Canada. No offense, but in your price range the last thing I would consider would be the aesthetics of the cue...
