Where is the fun in the game anymore?

My game has totally disappeared on me as of late..I can't run three balls hardly. I have no idea what's going on in my brain. Maybe its the cue. Maybe its me. Hell if I know.

Anybody cheer me up or tell me something to fire me up to get back into pool more serious?

Drivermaker, JimBo where is a good insult when ya need one?

A sure fix...

You need to go the nearest bar or local pool hall and get a good game of 1.00 3 ball going!!! Better have a few beers too and keep the pitchers coming as well...just get the balls and start setting them up and breaking and running in any order and soon many comers will not be able to resist....I guarantee you will have a blast and probably make a bunch of new friends and you will definately fire yourself up for pocketing balls...

Enjoy...

Mr. J. :-)

I'll tell you like they told me.......

If I played like you, I'd take 2 weeks off. Then quit completely.

You'll be OK. Go on over to Mobile week after next. Watching the players (and atmosphere) there will fire you up when nothing else will.

A couple of things I do when I get in the board mode:

1) Change games - If you normally play 9-ball switch to straight or 1p, just change things up

2) Go to a different room - This always helps, I'm not sure what's close to you, but travel for a couple of hours and go to a place you've been wanting to try

3) Remember it's only a game - Games and hobbies are meant to be fun and when it's not fun anymore, it becomes work. There a few of us on here who want to come home from a job only to work at playing pool. Relax and have fun

4) When all else fails - I take a break. It could be as short as a week or as long as 2-3 years (the last break I took). I don't recommend this as it takes about a year to get your game back.

This is what I do...hope it works for you

Shorty don't listen to these idiots. You're shot, washed up, it's all over for you now. There's no need to fight against it anymore, just pack up all your cues and ship them to me and I'll be happy to give them a good home ;-)

No, but seriously now. Get all your cues together, put them on your table, and ask yourself if you'd ever seriously consider selling everything you have. If your answer is no, start thinking about why, remember all the times you have enjoyed playing, let yourself reminisce about your favorite racks, or your luckiest shot, or your most memorable opponents. Then, when it feels natural, reach out and pick up your cue and shoot a few easy shots in. Don't try to play a complex excersise or even play a specific game, just keep setting up and shooting easy shots focusing on your happy memories playing Pool.

If you still feel miserable after doing that for a few hours then go get really drunk and repeat the procedure above. Then if you are still not feeling better post me all your cues before you sober up!

Go spend some time over at RSB... if that don't do it, nuttin' will! :D :p

It does suck to go through what you're going through. My situation is a tad different because I quit playing altogether about 7 yrs ago so I'm completely out of stoke. As much as I want to get back into it, it's really depressing. I spent some time at the table this weekend and was embarassed. LOL, the sad part is that I was the best shot in there and I was still embarassed. :p I don't have any advice to give you but I do know that you'll find your groove again, it's not permanent. ;)

Hey Shorty,

Pop in a vid or two of some serious Accu-Stats tapes, and you'll probably just sit there and belch. Or worse.

But really, watching an intense match can give you the boot off the caboose to do something.

Tis true. As I said earlier, I've been out of pool for awhile now but I've noticed that I really miss it and want to get back into it the most after going to a pro event. Accu-Stats is the next best thing when there's not a tourney to go to.

Hey Timberly,

I'm glad you had a great time at Great Slates! JPNEWT will be having an event there on August 20th/21st and I'm just making up the flyers. It looks like a great room! I know they were voted "Best Room" by Billiards Digest, I'm working on the info for the www.newt9ball.com site so stay tuned and if you need any more info, just email me or call me.

I didn't know that they were voted Best Room...was that regional or overall? Either way, it's quite the compliment and deservedly so. I noticed something when I was there and I'm glad you brought it up. When there's a tournament there, where do the spectators sit? That was the only drawback that I saw as far as the room goes.

Thanks!

Shorty,

Take it easy! Why don't you just throw some balls up on the table and start shooting easy shots for a while and build up your confidence again. Something in your basics is probably awry and you just need to tune it up. Come on man, don't get discouraged!!

hey...

Shorty...don't let some bad games get in the way of something I know you REALLY enjoy, or wouldn't be here. I know when I got out of the hospital and played initially, I was nowhere near what I used to be. I've decided to stop playing for money, and let nature take its course. you just need to wait this out, as it WILL come back, mine is slowly. watch pool on tv like I try to, and watch others play, and then decide to yourself if you don't play better than you are now. if this don't work...give me a call and I'll try to "talk you back into it". don't give up little fella...I haven't. my phone # is ?????? good luck with "getting it back". call me and you'll realize I'm not really as bad as others think, you just MIGHT get a tip on staying in stroke you didn't know. who knows...you probably still play better than I do right now. keep your head up Shorty!! they tell me "it just takes time"

Shorty,

I don't know if you know anything about 3-cushion. I played competitively for ten or so years and traveled the country and abroad playing the game. Then I started to get an attitude much like yours. At the time, my high run was 16 in a tournament game (a rough equivilant to a 130-150 ball run in straight pool), and that was after months of playing six days a week. I decided to quit the game and took two years off. In those two years I did not pick up a cue once with the exception of playing a few games of pool with some friends on one or two occasions. After two years off and not picking up a cue in a very long time, I went to Chris's Billiards here in Chicago. I got in a game with a player I have a lot of respect for, and managed to run a 14 in my 5th inning. No practice, nothing.

Billiards, and I suppose pool too, tends to reflect that which is going on in your life. When I quit playing in tournaments, it was so as a result of my needing to prioritize things in my life. Imagine that the cloth is like a canvasse, and the balls and your cue are paints and a brush. No matter how skilled the artist, he can only paint what comes to him; he can't escape the images created in his head. I would go out on a limb and guess that it is not your pool game that is suffering, but rather it is reflecting something else that is bothering you; something that you can't get out of your head when at the table. If that is the case, many would tell you to simply block it out when you play. I find that to be very difficult at times. I would rather try to fix it, and maybe take a few weeks (or years if you need them like I did) off until you do so. If I am off base in all of this, I am sorry. If so, check your mechanics and pre-shot routine :) When I was having problems at the table I used to hope that they were mechanical rather than something in my head. Mechanics are easy to fix...

Good luck,

Deno Andrews

sorry to beat a did horse here............but sounds like you need to practice more.

you're having a consistentcy problem, and consistentcy starts and ends with a consistent practice.
