New break rule for European Open

camel tour broke from the box yrs ago. combined with 9-on-spot should slow down the b&r's. good idea imo. without this 9b can be a joke at the top level.
No, it isn't a joke. Nobody was stringing racks in Stage 2 at the UK Open. With tight pockets, nine ball is plenty challenging enough, and the break rules in use continued to ensure that the cream kept rising to the top in the Matchroom events. For the five Matchroom events contested so far in 2022, here are the winners.

Premier League Pool - Albin Ouschan
World Pool Championship - Shane Van Boening
World Pool Masters - Josh Filler
UK Open - Josh Filler
World Cup of Pool - Team Spain (Sanchez-Ruiz and Alcaide)

The argument that nine ball is too easy does not hold up to scrutiny.

In addition, this break rule discriminates against American entrants, most of whom have played with nine on the spot just a handful of times in their entire careers. In contrast, Euro-tour has been using nine on the spot for many years, although they don't break from the box.

This new break rule is the real joke.

While I could possibly be wrong, I think you're mistaken. I believe it's a core Matchroom event and a major, which is more than just a Matchroom-affiliated rankings event. The arena is set up identically to the way the UK Open was set up, with the three-table setup (center table not used until Stage 2) and the remainder of the tables directly behind. The arena is also filled with signs and banners that say "Nine Ball" on them, and that's how Matchroom sets up their arenas in its core events to best market nine ball.

Best of luck to Matchroom and the players at the European Open.

no, i'm pretty sure i'm not mistaken, asian 9-ball open is on the MR calendar but it will not be them promoting. some asian org is promoting

Sorry, I dogged it here. I was referring to the European Open, not the Asian Open, an event with which I was not familiar.

Thanks for the correction.

Tried watching some today. I'm kinda on the fence as to the grey cloth but those balls are a deal breaker for me. I'd rather watch re-runs of old CamelTour matches than this. The pace of play on the match i tried to sweat was GLACIAL.

it's free pool with high quality production and good commentary (JJ, boyes) so i don't care about what ball set they are using. i do care about the pace of play though. they seem to put the most snail like players on the tv table. would like 30 sec shot clock on every match.

oscar dominguez vs estonia guy is decent pace. oscar is up 5-2 after some brilliant racks, a highlight massé shot and a monster fluke:

Yeah, I briefly sweated Labutis vs Edwards but the pathetic pace of play was more than I could handle so I stopped watching. This won't be an issue in Stage 2 so I'll stay patient.

To be honest, I used to like the camel-colored cloth. I also like the grey cloth.

Yep, right. I didn't have an opportunity to watch anything of Day 1 live, so I decided to browse the recorded stream on fast forward. And switched youtube player to x1.5 speed setting. Even then Matt Edwards was taking too long between the shots! 🙃

asian open is run by the apf, asian pool federation.

APF it is. I wonder what do APBU think of this organization. (APBU goes for Asian Pocket-Billiard Union, which is the governing body for pool in Asia). Anyway, I think we have to wait until the end of August when the event unfolds, in order to get back to this question, as it is a bit off-topic here.

I see that loser's bracket matches are races to 8. I've always approved of having shorter races in loser's bracket play.

With the second day starting in a few hours, I think, that the seeding is a bit unbalanced.
Since, as I understand it, the players entering the day, play it down till the winners qualification round.

On the first day we only saw Shaw and Yapp, who is already on the losers side, as the only big names.
Maybe add Darren, Lechner and Oi.

Day two will feature Shane, Filler, Albin, FSR, Alcaide, Kazakis with Kaci, Sky, He, Fortunski, Mika, Pehlivanovic, Feijen and Grabe in the mix too.
I wonder if we will see some early exits today.

day two matches are spread out over the bracket, so all these top names aren't on the same half. don't think shaw has lost, but yapp did lose

Ah, ok ! Thanks for the clarification!
And yes, only Yapp has lost a match already. Maybe my post was a bit misleading.

tony drago is playing great. he just made a highlight break out shot. how old is tony? maybe it's the weight loss and the glasses but am i wrong in saying pushing 60?

wish some other players would watch and learn to speed up their game a bit

filler messing up the schedule by whitewashing his opponent in short time. schedule change is tyler styer vs marco dorenburg up next

The changes are just for this event correct?

nope. all upcoming MR events. plus pat fleming has been having this break rule for years, minus the break box and plus three ball kitchen rule, so i expect the international open and the DCC to (continue to) be similar.

All things considered 9-ball was changed a lot from the old rules so a move back towards the middle might provide more chances for everyone concerned. If the pots were higher and the pay outs flatter, I could see the rules not changing. A year will tell alot.
