I just came from Keith Josey's house, He has been working with me on trying to get the perfect taper for me. My Josey hits stiffer than any other cue I have every picked up.

He showed me some of his new designs, You can check them out here.....http://www.joseycues.com/cues.php
The second one down is like Tony Watson's cue.

And if you like fancy detailed, Check out here...

The gambler design cue is a super nice looking cue.

I liked the one I had but could not get used to not having a wrap. Mine was
sorta plain but looked real good.
I hear you are hitting them pretty good these days. This is big frank that used to live in Athens. Ever see Bruce any? He was supposed to get a
really really nice Josey right before I moved to SoCal but am not sure if he got it. Last I saw he was still shooting with that Rick Howard sneaky pete.

What kind of taper did you get? Is your cue a little longer than most?
The one I had was about 60 inches if I remember right. I liked it being
longer though. I felt like I had a good weight distribution with the
added length.

Any action happening around the south?

Good to talk to you Frank. I'm not playing that good, One day I can't miss a ball and can beat anybody in Tommy Kennedy's race to 7 tournaments....and then the next day I can't drop one in the pocket.
Bruce plays with a really really nice Josey and is playing really well when he does play. He only plays when there is a big tournament close to him.
I prefer a long taper where the shaft is the same for about 10 to 12 inches. Keith has been helping me tweak my shafts to my preference. He works with people on their designs and the hit that they want better than any other cue maker I've ever met.
Talk to you later,
Drale

Sorry to hear that i guess we'll cross tables someday..

i will say keith makes a great looking cue....but alot of people only play with them cause of the beauty.....keith has no idea of the dynamics involved in cuemaking.....i hate to be mean but if hes a cuemaker im the pope.......juston

I'm sorry to hear that you don't like the way Josey sticks hit. They do hit very very stiff because of the taper he puts on cues. A lot of players get more of a pro taper where the shaft is thinner for a longer distance than what he puts on his custom cues. I personally have seen Keith's cues go from plain sneaky Pete's starting in 93 to now and have study with some of the other known "Master Cue Makers". Over my 15 years of playing I have many cues in my collection.....Southwest, It's George, Mcdermott, and Schon. I also played with a Cog for about a full 2 years.....BY FAR....My JOSEY hits stiffer than any other of my cues. I'm actually having my taper fine tuned because it hits to stiff. Some people love Meucci's with that old whippy shaft and others like stiff cues. Whatever floats you boat!! But, Keith does know a lot about making cues.

pope juston

i have many cues, dayton,cog,black boar,phillippi.etc etc
some fancy some plain they all play differntly none of them
are hit poorly. i play with all of them but i always go back
to my josey which was my first custom cue.
you may not like that stiff hit, but dosn't your dayton hit
stiff too.
all i really want to say is that its pretty lame to bad mouth
a quality person like keith

Gosh Juston, that's a really mean thing to say. I would say that I have a fair bit of experience with cues and I have hit with plain Jane Josey cues that play jam up. Shawn Putnam seems to do pretty well with his Josey as well.

Just what is it about his products that makes you feel that they are NOT pool cues. I mean if you don't like the hit that's one thing but to go so far as to say the man is NOT a cuemaker is taking it to another level.

I want to go on record as saying that I have played with and evaluated Josey cues and they are every bit as much cue as anyone else's that I have seen in craftsmanship, design and hit.

I've gotten my @ss kicked many times by excellent players who used a bent bar cue gotten off of the wall. Never, NEVER will I ever judge a player by the cue he plays even if it's a Bala whatever. Ya' hear that one, Tom Cruise?

this is strictly my thoughts.....keiths cues are pretty .....but keith doesnt even play pool.....dayton on the other hand is a player.....i have seen some joseys that play ok,but no consistency....and this cue maker as some call him has never from all the cues i have seen shown that he knows how to make a custon.....why do people think that just because his cues have all thos fancy inlay in them they are custon.......i would like to see him build a traditional cue likne barry szamboti, tascarella ,schick......my biggest problem is keiths cues only play good if after you get one you have it tuned up......and from experience daytons cues come ready to play no tuning needed....i am glad that keith makes a living at what he does......but i dont think he will ever be a true craftsman until he builds a real cue......and before anyone says anything i have seen and played with many of blud cues and yes he makes a very nice cue with traditional points......where is keiths at.....and understand ....not a arguement just my opinion.......juston

Keith Josey builds cues. Whether he plays pool a little or at all is of zero consequence as many knowledgeable people who buy his cues are good and great players and they obviously feel that his cues play well enough for them.

Being a pool player is not a prerequisite to building cues. Being a pool player may give one an edge by having a certain sense of the elusive "hit" that all pool players look for. I believe that there is a certain common part of hit that appeals to all players and so the good cuemakers who are also good players may be able to make cues that get to that magical characteristic of being known as a "good hitting cue"'. But just being a player who makes cues does not guarantee that one will be a good machinist and engineer who is able to perform all the steps needed to make a good cue.

Keith Josey has consistently shown that he does everything one needs to do to make pool cues. They are used by pool players and prized by collectors.

I think is a blind test his cues would perform very well against the others you have mentioned when tested with a group of people who are not pre-biased for one type of cuemaking vs. the other.

I remember when Keith did everything by hand...and he still can. I have one of his cues he did all by hand. Keith does play pool.....He is not great or anything but he does play. Keith still will make a cue by hand, It would be very pricey.
