Anyone notice a new generation of filipinos sneaking up to the top of the pool world? An article on the homepage says Alcano will be playing in the US, and Orcullo, Valle, Manalo etc. have lately also been making a name for themselves. There was talk a few years ago of the end of the era in which filipinos reined over the pool world, as stars like Efren and Busta grew older, and pool grew internationally in places like Europe and Taiwan. Lately several young guns seem poised to pick up where their older countrymen will eventually leave off.

1. Joven Bustamante-He has been playing at a high level and has overcome the bigname-opponent jitters. He's the only one who beat Efren in the 2005 8b WPC Fujairah. He's a smidgin above the ff:
2. Carlo Boado, Owat, Jerome Pena and Russian Ceniza- all in the same level. Russian gives Santos S the wild7 in money matches.
3. Revo David- best 16 year older that has been matching up with lower tier internationalists but stll gets some weight from the above. I'm still training the mental side of his game and he's currently playing in the National Training Pool Qualifiers as we speak. I'll deal with the mental and they can deal with the physical.

I personally find that playing under pressure is a cultural advantage that Phillipino's have over some other nations. Gambling is imbred in their culture from a very early age, so playing in money matches is not a big deal to a lot of Phillipino's. They love to play for money and seem to have no fear in losing.They also play with a lot of heart and pride and I think a lot of that can be attributed to the success of Reyes,Bustamante, Parica etc etc.
Once skill is developed, pool is a very mental sport. I find it really encouraging that you are training some of these young future stars in that regard. Best of luck to you and your players, as I love what the Phillipinos have brought to the game of pool.

Efren, Bustamante and Parica are the ones that paved the way for tehm all. They were the ones who gave hope and proved that dreams do come true without regard to personal financial status. Thank you all too for the support, friendship, straining to understand instead of just ridiculing and unselfish assistance that you extend these guys. I've never had the opportunity to see Orcullo play ,however, I've been hearing some substancial rumours that he is perhaps the Phillipine's best money (gambling) player.Up until recentley ,he had taken Pagulayan for a lot of cash and I've heard he has beaten Reyes and Bustamante out of cash as well.
Alex finally took some cash from him, however, Orcullo is still up quite a bit.The talent in the Phillipines is unbelievable.

I totally agree... Ronnie Alcano has the smoothest stroke, even better than Bustamante.... his surgical performance vs Yang Ching Chang (spell?) in one of the Asian Tour(SMB finals)... was just pure art.... I think Ronnie didn't have much opportunity to show off his real skills when he was in US.... he's competed mostly in Josh tour... to me he is definitely a top tier player.... i wish he comes back to US .... its a tragedy not to see him play here again...

The gap has narrowed greatly between the Filipinos and the rest, with Germany and Taiwan having made the most progress, but the prevailing view on this forum has always been that the Fillipino system of developing great young players is second to none and that means that Fillipino excellence at pool is not a transient phenomenon, but instead something to be expected for decades to come.
Especially during the qualifiers for the 2004 and 2005 WPC events, here on the forum, we reveled in the depth of the Fillipino talent pool.
I think pool development in the philippines still has much to improve. all the greats i.e. reyes, bustamante, parica, pagulayan, et. al. developed their skills in the absence of any government interference or support, unlike in taiwan or germany, or the presence of a formal league infrastructure like in germany or the netherlands. which probably explains why germany and taiwan are catching up with the philippines. sure, gambling is a great way to build the mental game, but if no one would teach the fundamentals, good players would be few and far in between.
