ugh!! I played with my newly tipped McDermott last night and I was a total PIG!! I was terrible!! I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn last night to save my life. I got to the point where when I missed a shot, I set it back up.... and then I kept missing the same (longer) shot over and over lol.

I think my frustration is that I am currently unable to diagnose where I am off.

That can be very frustrating for sure . All I can suggest is to stand up and start all over again with your pre shot routine , taking a few strokes , then get down on the shot visualizing the cue ball hitting the object ball into the pocket first not worrying about where the cue ball ends up just pocketing the object ball .

After you make it then work on getting shape on the next ball .

Had at it again last night for a short spell. Slowing down does help a bit. I think I look up from the CB when I play faster. That’s probably just one of a bout a half dozen issues. But hey, gotta start somewhere right!?

How rough should my medium tip be before chalk is applied? Anyone have a picture?

In all honesty for myself and the G2 tips I rarely ever use anything on the surface unless I have a serious miss cue on a shot which rarely ever happens , knock on wood ha ha !

I'd shoot for a peach fuzz effect if that makes sense or in other words a very lite texture difference until you complete the break in period so to speak .

Hello!

I‘m new here, and just registered before Christmas. I live in Austria and never really played any cue games before, but I always loved watching Snooker matches! So I decided 1 1/2 years ago to get myself a pool table. It is not a brand table but was made by a builder in Poland. He talked me through all the measurements and stuff before I ordered my table, so I knew it will get a bit crowded in my cellar. Here‘s a picture of my table:

IMG_7875.jpeg

I set it up in my old vine cellar. There are a few tricky spots, for example the left side where a vine storage is and the top right corner where my water installations with my water dehardener (is this the right term? 😄). Most of the table is playable with a standard cue. Some areas, where I have to play a close to 90 degree angle with my cue ball on the rail, I have to use a shorter 120cm jump ball cue. And, to be honest, the corner with my water installations can get very tricky depending on the shot.

Neither the less, I talked through this with the builder and decided to go for a 8ft table. As I do not play competitive in any way, I prefered having the longer shots most of the time, and taking a few drawbacks on some shots from the rail. I play just for fun there anyway 😊

My father is a locksmith, and I worked and learned a lot in his shop. So I am able to customize a few things as well for my table, like triangle holders, cue holders, I made a plateau beneath the table for storing my mostly used balls, and I customized a cue as a rest, because I like to have them look all the same…

I play about 2h per week, depending on my free time, sometimes maybe 3-4. So I am still working on the basics, but I really enjoy it so far!

And I started collecting pool balls. But not as some of you do here (meaning different colors of 8 ball sets, I‘ve read through that pool ball showcase thread), but I try to find different sized balls, and balls for different games, like: Russian Pyramid in 68mm and 57mm, Blackball in 51mm, 57mm and about 60mm (got some used Italian Bocette balls for this set). Snooker balls in 54mm and 57mm, a few Carom balls in 62mm, and a few sets of standard 57mm pool balls. I bought some used collections with interesting sizes to expand the variaty of balls I have. I really like discovering new games besides 8, 9, 10 ball, and the usual stuff. Researching things like that is the main thing I do, besides practicing my cueing game 😃

I’m aware, that some of those games are not meant to be played on an American pool table, but I find it very interesting how the different balls react and how easy/hard it is using them compared to a 57mm set. I‘d really love to expand my collection with more obscure balls like starball, poker ball and things like that, but being a European it seems really hard to find used balls besides 8 ball - or just really very expensive importing them…

I am not sure if my table is build correct though, because my middle pockets are very narrow, and deflect some balls which were already inside the pocket. The nails with which the plastic pockets itself are secured are a very big problem, because the balls bounce back from them! That‘s another reason for me registering here, maybe I can improve my table a bit more 😄

Thanks for reading all of this!

And yes, you are right. It’s a water softener, my bad there. I read scientific stuff for work, and watch movies in English. But I hadn‘t have to talk for at least 20 years since I left school and don‘t write very much either. So I‘m not used to it, although I understand most of it without problems. It‘s just a lack of practice and eloquence really. I just feel like stumbling around words most of the time 😄

Hi.I am in Oklahoma, USA. I am new here and used to play a lot. Then a Family and work got in the way and had to put the old pool game in a pause mode for 30 years. I am amazed at how many people just casually run 4-5 racks of 8-ball or 9-ball just warming up. I was a fairly High Rated player in the Old Busch Pool league and the most I ever run in a row was 2 and that was only twice a year. Since I have started back playing and working on my game I have run one of each. A lot of skills are coming back and it's getting really fun again. I can see now days you have to be a lot better now to be competitive. I am older and it didn't take long to realize that I need some Billiard Glasses and the progressive(Bowing Cue Stick) were not going to work.I will say that Youtube has made me progress much faster than the old way when I played. I think if I listen and practice what is preached I might even be better than I was in my prime. Glad to Be here and love the info.
All the Best Gang,
Glenee

I got all my sticks re-tipped with medium tips, and I gotta say, I hate them lol. I can't draw a ball to save my life!! Literally every single time I gotta do so for position, it's a mis-cue. Used to be able to pull the CB quite easily.

I have a scuffer and a shaper but am contemplating taking some sand paper to them, or putting on a softer tip.

Give it a couple days of playing and reshaping to see if it gets better. I had the same issue .

Hi all, new here...located in central Illinois. Used to play a lot when I was younger and created/ran a pool league for a few years. Got busy with kids, life, work and took a break for about 16 years until my son and daughter both recently expressed an interest in pool! Fantastic, I said...let's get a pool table and now I'm back! Couldn't believe how much has changed and how much hasn't...saw so many familiar faces my first night back to pool leagues! But $20 for a piece of chalk...wth happened there!?

First. Welcome. I am fairly new here myself. It is a shock how expensive all billiard supplies have got. Thank god we still have masters for chalk. You will find some of the newer chalks are a lot cleaner than you remember. Once again Welcome.

I just got approved, waited 5 years to be approved!!!
I stopped playing in 1992. Used to live in NJ where I would go from time to time to Elizabeth, NJ to play at west end Billiards. What a place that was in the late 80s and 90s. They had a nine ball tournament every Tuesday and it was common to see Steve Mizerak, Allen Hopkins , Ray Martin and the Jack Calavita. It was there , I also met Pete Tascarella . What a place that was. I am starting to play again but boy has pool changed!! What is this Fargo rating? Anyway excited to be part of the pool community once again.
