New Here? - Introduce Yourself

Hi all,

I am Scott, based just outside Glasgow, Scotland.

Played a bit as a kid on English 6ft reds and yellow tables, then went decades never going near a table until a family holiday when me and my then 10 yr old son were in a bar called Game Changers on I drive in Orlando that had 2 pool tables that he couldn’t get enough of. This was 8 years ago. He’s now 18 and better than me.

A local club in Rutherglen Glasgow opened up that has about 8 English tables and 6 Rasson Ox 9’ American tables (as we call them) so we became regulars in there. The club is owned by Jayson Shaw’s sister and her family I believe, as we have seen him in there a few times.

Beautiful venue where the tables are kept in pristine condition and reclothed at least once a year from what I have seen.

Neither of us plays competitively, although we should/could probably try it, my son especially as he is better than me.

We play mostly 9 ball, I have tried 14.1 but even just me on the table I find it too hard….. getting that last ball in the right place, and then the CB in the right place to be able to split the pack is a real challenge.

I play most of my shots hitting the centre of the CB, either middle, or top and bottom, that gets me mostly where I want to go, as soon as left or right is attempted, it falls apart

So our new addiction helped with a house move that resulted in a converted garage where we now have a Rasson Ox 8ft table with Simonis tournament blue cloth, and some Aramith TV black balls. Much as I’d have loved a Diamond or Brunswick GC, they are double the cost here in the UK, and we are not good enough to justify that. As it stands, we are just using the Aramith cues that came with the table pack, as none of us feels we are good enough yet to justify spending big £££££s on cues.

Room was too small for a 9ft, and even with the 8ft we need to revert to smaller cues occasionally, but we can live with this.

Have been reading this forum for a few months and have already picked up some tips that have improved my play

I’m 53 now and getting close to retirement, so the aim is to spend the retirement when it comes getting betters

Great forum, have really enjoyed reading it so far.

Hello!

Got a similar story as many new members to this site, I would guess. Grew up playing pool and played off and on into the late 90's then life and everything else got in the way. Fast forward 25 years and I find my JP Sneaky cleaning up the garage and it was like magic! Brought me back and I could not get to a pool room fast enough. Played everyday for almost a month and the wife started giving me grief for taking off to town everyday. I suggested our own table would fix that and to my surprise she agreed! There were, of course, stipulations but I will save that for another thread.

I have been lurking and learning here for the last few months and this place is a wealth of knowledge and a great cast of characters. I have many thanks to make to the prolific content creators and site contributors and I hope to add some value to this awesome site. I am lucky that I work form home and can play everyday, can't make it past the table without picking up a cue and hitting a few balls in between meetings.

I am on my way to HAMB but I think making a million balls would be better.

Greetings from Southern Wisconsin! I have been reading a lot the last few weeks, and finally joined :)

Like many have written in their own stories, I’ve always enjoyed playing. I played on my Grandparents Sears table growing up, at taverns and the union all through my college years (never in league), and now at home. I’m probably pretty bad by most people’s standards, but I’d really like to change that. I just don’t really know where to start. In the last several weeks, I have been playing 6-7 times per week and I am getting better (imagine that!). I have also gone back to “cue ball last” in terms my shots, and that seems to be a big help.

We recently reconfigured out rec room now that my son has flown the coup. My table is the middle of the room and a focal point. We had new Championship 21oz cloth put on an 8’ Brunswick Bridgeport in August – Black. I have a set of gently used Aramith Premium Balls that I really like, and I clean them with a dab of Aramith cleaner every 2-3 weeks. I recently received a couple of birthday gift cards to spend on a new cue at one of the nearby billiard places. But instead I had new tips put on my current cues (Scmelke, Cuetec and Mcdermott). I am going to stick with them for the time being and keep getting better

Anyway, that’s where I’m at! I really want to start doing things “correctly” if possible. I just don’t know quite how to go about it. Hoping to glean some knowledge and understanding from the fine folks on here without being a huge pain in the backside.

My story is similar but I am about 3 years down the road from you... I say focus on the fundamentals. I really like Ralph Eckert. He has a series on YouTube called Structure that has really been helpful. He also has an app called Check Billiards that I us to focus my training.
Hope this helps.
Where is home? I am in Central Mississippi.

Thanks for the info, B! I will chase down some of those vids later on today :)

Home is in SE Wisconsin. Not much practice for me last night as I got busy with the Honey-do list :) I'll have more time tonight. Can't wait to get my shafts back!!!

My home table is an 8' Brunswick as well. I joined a league a few years back... Very helpful but, I have leved out lately mostly due to lack of practice time. Some of us in my league are heading to Vegas for the BCA Championship in late February so I am spending time on the table getting ready :)

Oh my that sounds cool!! I'm not a league guy. Pretty much just down in the rec room by myself. If I can figure out how to reduce the file size of the picture on my iphone 14, I'll upload one.

Thanks!!

Mrs. Brasco said one day last summer, "I think we should put the pool table in the middle of the room, and move the movie room to where the table is." Only hang up was the surround sound (that we never use) was set up for that larger room. Hasn't been an issue though :)

It's so much easier to play when I don't feel like Frank and Kramer from Seinfeld.

Just and update:

I picked up my cues last night. The tips look really good, but I did not have time to play as the ride was about an hour each way and took place after work. The McDermott is still perfectly straight. The Scmelke has a touch of "wobble" in the middle of the shaft when I roll it by itself. However I did not see the tip/ferril move at all on the roll. Cuetec is not perfect either, but better than a lot of bar cues I've used. I probably should not have sunk money into new tips on the wobblers, but I didn't really want to pony up for new cues at this stage of my play. Perhaps a new shaft only is a possibility ???

I prefer the McD and that one is perfectly straight. I may just keep looking forward and not worry too much about the other two cues at this stage of my game. I'm sure I will still play them now and again anyway.

There's nothing wrong with a McDermott cue , for many year's a C -18 was my main playing cue even with 13 1/2 mm shafts the amount of english I got from each shot was incredible .

Sadly I was forced in to retiring it because of a broken water pipe near where I stored it , yes I was crushed !
A close 2nd place was a custom Dufferin sneaky Pete a friend of mine made for me it survived because the case it's stored in is 2" pvc pipe and very water proof !
