IF - Lets say, Buddy was to be playing Efren at 7 pm tonight and you knew it was going to be on the internet - LIVE - Would you pay $4.95 to watch?

If the coverage is as good as BCn's first coverage of the Derby City Classic, you betcha! Actually, for $4.95, wth, as long as the camera was just stationary and showed the whole picture of the players and the table I'd be happy to part with the $ to see it. I don't know if you can get a happy meal for much less than that!!

You may want to try...........

No, because sitting at a computer to watch a match is a serious eye strain. JMO..

1pRoscoe - You may want to try either getting a new flat screen, digital, 21 inch monitor or burning a CD to watch on whatever you like. The new monitors are fantastic. I have to have one because I do a lot of graphics in my business.

I've got a 17" flat panel, but what I think the problem is that what I have seen thus far (streaming media) has been lower quality from a live feed. If it was high quality - sure!

This is an excellent idea Tom. I especially like the fact that the 'schedule' could end up being quite diverse and thereby appeal to a wide range of people. So if you're not interested in Efren vs Buddy playing 9 ball at 7:00, you might instead watch a 1P or 3C game on another 'channel'.

I can see how this could be made to work for all stakeholders (players, promoter/producer, hall owner, ISP, viewers).

On the technical side, as others have mentioned, the image quality has to be reasonable for this to be successful in the long run. If the quality is poor there will be little or no repeat business.

I would love it.

Hell yeah I would. And I'd pay to see other match ups and the various tours, however, it would HAVE to be LIVE.

This would be 1st class all the way...........

This would be 1st class all the way as I have a very good friend & neighbor who does Video & Audio for major motion pictures & commercials. I also do business with the main I.T./Networking person at Washington University. I'm sure he could figure out how to do this right and keep it from the hackers. The main ingredient is the fact that I'm in St. Louis and it is in the center of the U.S. We have easy access and are a major traveling thoroughfare. Who Knows? If I get enough encouragement & find the time to pursue this - It Just May Work!
The players would be playing for the internet gate as the prize. It would probably start off slow and grow. After success the prize would cap off at maybe $25K and I could start getting back my investment and maybe even make a buck. We’ll See.

If done right - The players would come......

At first I can see myself begging the players (I know most of them) to try something new but as success comes, I can see them knocking on my door. Naturally, the games & players would vary and like everything else, it would be "Market Driven".

I do like the concept. What kind of purse would the players receive? Part of the "gate"? Pre-determined amount? Both?

Those tiny little balls might be hard to see on a phone ...

Ya know they are going to play anyway. All of these 'matchups' discussed here are candidates for broadcast. So, if a couple of pro's are going at it anyway, I can't see them having a problem with the match being broadcast, especially considering that they might stand to make a bit of money from royalties etc. There will be some who are sceptical, but there are surely some pro players that would jump at the idea. I think the harder problem would be getting a selection of tables at various halls set up for broadcasting. The hall owner will have to be quite cooperative. The idea still has great merit for someone in a position like yours (knowing hall owners, pro players, and being a marketeer/promoter).

Have you ever seen this :

Sounds like a good idea but most pool players are too cheap to pony up and get off the dial-up (Like me!).

If it is like a month subscription yes and compatiable with Windows 98, yes.

Because I would rather Spend $4.95 on a Pitcher Beer after Playing Pool.. :o

Enough Encouragement To Go Forward.

As the poll indicates, I have enough encouragement to go forward and pursue this new concept. Will keep you all posted on any progress & Thank You.

I'll say a qualified No. If it was tape rather than live I'd be more inclined to say yes. Bandwidth is the problem. I have cable internet. If you only have a phone hook up you should have said no right away. Live video over the internet just isn't up to par yet. If it is taped you can sit there and wait for the download and then watch it. If it is live and your connection goes slow for a few moments, you've missed 3 of 4 shots while you wait. Also the picture is probably not going to be very good. If you've went to that caromtv link, you'll know what I mean. 320x240 extrapolated to 640x 480 if you set MS media player to 2x just isn't clear enough to see the detail shooter on here would be looking to see. Maybe I'm wrong though, but unless video over the internet has come a long long way in the last 6 months and I'm not aware of it, my answer is no - to live and maybe (if the vid was good enough) - to taped
