Just pulled the trigger on a new Kilby carom cue. I have hit with one of kilby's cues at my local ph and it hit great, and looked awesome. Ron Kilby does some great work and I like his views on cue building, his website has some great reading, anyways, I got a 28 ", 17.5oz satinwood forearm, cored amboyna handle, purpleheart butt, woven butterfly points, 2- 30", wood pin, 12.2mm, grade AAAA , hard maple shafts, ivorine ferrules, straight carom taper, medium-hard moori's, custom joint protectors, all for $595. I am pretty happy with the amount of cue for the price, I'll post more pics when I get it.

kilby cue

Kilby has some great looking cues.
Out of curiosity, on your purchse you stated, the shafts are "straight, carom tapers". Can you be more explicit. It seems to be somewhat of a conundrum...Straight with a carom taper? Tnx

I'm sure he just means a typical conical taper. Which I also call "straight" since it is not curved like a pool cue shaft taper.

yes, conical tapers, straight taper from the joint down to the tip, where a pool shaft has some flat/level spots, a conical does not.

I have a Kilby as well...Ron offers a lotta cue for the $, for sure.

I have a Shooni taper and a standard taper too. I prefer the shoonI!

I think we have a difference in terminology.
According to Kilby's website shaft information:
A carom taper is a conical taper from tip to joint with no straight points
along this plane...The term "straight" implies that there are flat spots along this plane...Therefore, when you used the two terms together,
"straight carom taper" was the cause for my concern.
In your case, the term Carom or conical taper would have been suffice.
But when you added the term straight carom taper was the area of confusion.
I do not want to belabor the point.

You have purchased a great looking cue from a well known cue-maker.
I hope you make many billiards with it.

Shooni versus European taper

A traditional European taper is slightly (!) convex, and may appear to be perfectly conical though it is not. The Shooni taper (proprietary, thank you) is concave, more akin to a pool taper though there is no straight section and the shaft is still very stiff.

got it !

Well the cue arrives today, shipped sat and arrived mon, pretty fast, I will shot with it tomorrow afternoon, in the meantime, here are some pics. The finish is awesome, weight seems perfect, grain on shafts is nice and tight, can't wait...

I have had/used this cue for @ 2 weeks now and could not be happier. Hit is very solid, without any annoying "buzz" or "thwang". I recently changed tips from moori med. to triangle and like the hit even more, i have tried every layered tip and am not a fan of them. The balance is towards the back like a billiard cue should be, weight is great for me, @ 17.9- 18.2 . i have not used rubber grip like i used to because kilby uses a different finish on his cues, almost a sticky but smooth finish, very hard to explain, but i like it. It is like nothing i've felt before. Ron was great to deal with, very knowledgable, I was going to get his laminated shaft but he explained where i got his fat billiard taper it would be overkill, he would do it, but he did not feel it was needed as shaft is already very stiff , so i listened to him and feel he was right. Although in the future I would like to try one of his thinner tapers with his laminated shaft and see how I like that. Anyways, I hope I answered your questions.
