New layered tip

I know when getting a new layered tip it should be sharpened. My question is, should it also be trimmed down?

When I used to install tips I would trim them down, as you say, to 1/8th inch on the side.
Some do more, some do less.
My contention has always been that a cue tip is like a tall building. A tall building sways in the wind, much like a too tall cue tip deflects when it strikes the cue ball. It's a very small amount, doubtless, but nonetheless present, and anything you can do to keep old whitey on his intended course the better off you are.
Oh, yes. If the cue tip is too short it's life expectancy is reduced.

Hmmm...1/8th of an inch. Lower than I thought.

I just measured my kamui tip and its 5/8th of an inch (I've had it for about a month, so I'm guessing it started out around 6/8th of an inch)

5/8th of a inch.......I think that's a error....
Ps. 6/8ths is 3/4 of a inch.

Just shape it..brake with it a little..re-shape it..let it mushroom naturally..trim it shape it..then at this point the tip shouldn't mushroom again unless your like me an stroke
really hard on some shots for fun..I just put a hard tip on my cue in April..trimmed an
re-shaped it once..still holding up..I play alot an brake with it once in awhile too.
but its a triangle tip too..so no real lose if I miss the tip up..other then getting another
good triangle tip installed..

I put a laminated Ultra Skin soft on my cue and left it full thickness. Reason is that it is easy to trim off more, but real hard to put it back on. I like it the way it is, but I may like it more as it wears down. If so, the next tip I put on I will trim it down to where I feel it plays best for me.

Also...my measurements I gave were of the whole tip height...not just the height of the side of the tip, which is about 3/16th..so not too far off of 1/8th

I have it taken down to 3/4's of its size it plays best right of the lathe. Tom agrees with this installation as well. This is for the Ultraskin. When I used to play with Kamuis I did te same and it played great right from te start. Prior to layered I had my triangles taken down to half to know if it hit good or not.

For me, having a thick tall tip feels weird to play with. The pros themselves showed me their tips and like it very low and not thick as well. Unless you're like Earl Strickland who can play with a tall thick mushroomed tip and still hit each ball pure I prefer them taken down right on install.

Allot of us stock tips .
If you would say the brand name then we would know more about what you are working with.

Everyone is different , what one person likes may not work out for the next.

Once you get the tip on shape it the way you like.
If you are unhappy with the way the tip plays shape it some more until you find the sweet spot.
If you don't find the hit or cue ball control that you wanted and you have sanded the tip away , then try a different hardness or try a different brand.
