Hello everyone.

My name is Josh, I'm 24 years old and I've been playing pool off and on for about 8 years now. I'm starting this thread to introduce myself and to ask for some friendly advice. :)

For the last couple of years, I simply haven't been playing much pool. I loved the game dearly, but the one pool hall in town I used to play at went through some serious changes and I got disgusted with all the players I knew. I used to play 2-3 hours a night, 4-5 nights a week for about 2 years. You know...when you can't drink and you need a place to hang out, the pool hall rocks. ;)

So, recently I met my new girlfriend who loves to play pool and we've made a point to go out once or twice a week and play. I've played a few old friends that I've run into, all of whom are rated a 6 speed. While the games have been a little tough, I've consistently beaten them 2 out of 3 games. How ever, when I played the local pool teacher who I think is rated an 8 speed, I got creamed. So I guess this would make me rougly a 7 speed? I never learned how the ranking system works so I don't know.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the game now more than ever and I feel like I'm also playing at the top of my game (so far that is...), but now I've got a fire in me to start taking the game seriously.

We are planning on finding a new house with in the next month or two and we are hoping to find one with a large living room for a 9' table. I want to start practicing daily and get back into the swing of things. So here is where I need advice...

A) I've been looking around the net for 9' tables and it's really all over the board. Some people say get a brand new table and eat the huge cost so you know the table has been cared for well. I simply can't afford to spend more than $2500 at the moment, so can you give me some pointers on where I might find a good used table?

B) I also need to know of good brands. I've always played on Brunswick tables which feel great to me, but recently I've seen Olio tabes praised on the net. Are they worth the talk? Any other brands you would recomend?

C) Are there any books or articles out there that will explain the little stuff, like proper cue repair, diffrences in table cloth, ect? I've got a JP cue that I really like right now, but it needs some work before I give it to my girlfriend and buy a new one. I ask about table cloth because I want to know what I'm talking about when I call someone up and ask them to refelt the table I buy.

D) Any videos or books you could recomend to help improve my game would be greatly appreciated. The one time I bought a video on pool, it came highly recomended. I watched it once and after learning almost nothing, I felt burned.

Anyway, thanks for reading my babble. I'm happy to have found this forum. :)

First and foremost, welcome to the forum. What table to get is a frequent forum topic, and, I sense the most preferred tables of those on the forum are the Brunswick Gold Crown IV and the Diamond Pro table. A poolroom that is either replacing its equipment, or god forbid, going out of business would likely be a good place to buy a used nine foot table.

As for books, get Phil Cappelle's "Play Your Best Pool" and, if you plan to learn nine ball, also get Phil Cappelle's "Play Your Best Nine Ball".

As for videos, those by the Monk are very good. Still, your story that the video you bought was a disappointment doesn't surprise me, for I don't care for too many of the videos out there, with the clear exception of the Rempe videos on straight pool, which are fantastic.

Good luck with your game.

Welcome. There is a lot of free material available at my web site at the link provided below. Feel free to get with me via e-mail if you have any questions. Best of luck to you.

Try ebay. You can find a few good 9ft tables in your price range the trick is shipping. Alot of the best deals are local pick up only. Dont feel as if you have to buy a new table to have a good one. New felt and rails on an old table and your good to go. Hope this helps

Welcome to the forum! Get ahold of "pooltablemech" here on this forum. He's located in Milton, Florida (near Ft. Walton Beach) and usually has some good used 9' Gold Crowns for sale. If you're going to have a table at home, have good cloth and equipment! I would suggest Simonis cloth! JMO though! Like BlackJack mentioned, there's plenty of info on the web for what you're looking for.
Cue Repair: find a local cue maker or cue repairman...get to know him! or find someone that you can trust to send your cues to.
Instruction: Find someone in your area, within a driving distance you're comfortable with, meet him/her and get to know him/her. I highly suggest videos from the BSACA www.billiardsanctuary.com. That's who I'm Certified thru.

Best of luck and you've come to the right place for info on the Cueing Arts!

Thanks for the fast replies guys. :D

I called around earlier this evening to the pool hall I'm visiting now and basicly they were stiff with the info. They have a beautiful group of Gold Crown tables that I've been playing on, but when I saw the sticker price on the brunswick site, I nearly choked. :( They said if I was interested I would need to call back and speak with the manager tomorrow.

I then called a local table retailer and they told me they only get Gold Crown tables in once every six months or so and they are usually 8' tables. I'm just not willing to settle for anything less than a 9'. They aren't a Brunswick dealer though, so I understand.

They did however mention that they had an AMF Oxford Playmaster table that was very similar in style for much less and they invited me to come shoot a few racks on it. I checked out the site and it looks like a naked version of the Gold Crown. I plan on checking out their shop on Thursday and shooting a few racks on it. They said they have 2 in the shop already set up with Simonis cloth, which I pretty much figured on using reguardless of what table I go with.

I'm emailing pooltablemech right now though... ;)

Again, you guys rock. Thanks for all the info.

Welcome to az. Try www.billiarddigest.com for another good forum. Use the search functions on these sites for any topic you have questions about. Check out your local newspaper for used tables. Ask the other players about tables and cue makers in your area. Keep practicing.

I found a description of the table on the net AMF Playmaster. Did you realize it only has 7/8" slate instead of one inch. I'm not sure that makes a big difference, but it should be noted at least.

Also, why not post the general area where you are located, somebody may be able to give you more specific information of room closings and such if they knew the area.

thats funny, i played in an amf bowling alley just the other day. i'm guessing they are the tables you are talking about, they had AMF on them. looked almost like a gold crown. and the most surprising thing(s) about them was that they played excellent. a little slow, but i think it had 760 cloth on it, and was not brand new. and also, you couldn't fit two balls side by side in the pockets. i was shocked. you would think a bowling alley would have canyons for players. and i'll say it again, they played GREAT.

I should have mentioned that before. Sorry. I'm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. If I found the right table for the right price, I wouldn't mind renting a U-Haul and driving to OKC, Kansas City, Dallas, ect. to pick it up. I've done that several times with snake cages to save money on shipping and it wasn't a big deal.

vapoolplayer: AMF is the bowling company. :)

I've heard that the AMF motorcycles were almost a Harley :) ... and the AMF vaulting pole I used 25 years ago had it's ups and downs. Good old American Machine and Foundry ....

Of course the real question: is it still American or really just an importer like Carrier Air Conditioner or a little bit of both?

My 2 minutes of googling suggested it is still an American operation, but I really wasn't looking for the ownership info. It started in 1900 in NYC. It was in the '80s when they owned Harley Davidson. I recall fondly the road trips we made from Saskatoon to Fargo ND to buy AMF Pacer pole vaulting poles, which were quite good in their day.
