you are a great guy to deal with , the cue had beautiful veneere colors!! and played great

Ken:

Congrats on the new cue! Tom is a full-blooded RB fan, so I am sure he has infected you too! Glad to hear that you like it. I have always enjoyed the RB cues I have owned.

Wonder if Tom still has his collection..... Ask him if he is ready to sell me that damaged one that he had... has no shafts and needs a major refinish job as I remember... split diamonds in the butt, I think....

Richard Black Qs

While the points/veneers are beautiful, and the butt sleeve also, I'm quite surprised at the very plain maple wood used in the forearm. I have considered getting a RB for a long time, but that forearm is a turnoff. :( Is there a reason he used such plain wood? Does he do that with all his Qs?

i don't think that forearm looks bad at all. i prefer the "clearer" maple for traditional pronged cues the most. in fact to me the best looking wood for traditional point work is perfectley clear unstained strait grain maple with very little grain similar to this pic. even this cues grain could be less noticable for my taste.

I read that Balabushka preferred the clear-grained wood, as he felt it produced a better hit....

And, yes, Richard uses some very highly figured woods for his forearms. Not sure if he saves them for his more expensive cues or not, but I have mainly seen nicer birdseye on his higher-end cues.

I have Richard building me 2 cues right now. One is highly figured Birdseye with Brazilian Rosewood with inlays and the other Curley Maple with Snakewood and inlays. All you have to is tell him what you want and that's what he'll use.

Here's a close-up of my forearm:

I think it has gorgeous color and figure. I asked for a highly figured fore arm. He said that he wished he had something better, but this was the best he could come up with. He didn't charge extra for sorting through either.

Plain Forearm

I'm not sure what-why-or-when cuemakers started using more highly figured woods....this Richard Black cue was made in the early to mid
80's -- it's just a more traditional look ;)

I'm pretty sure Cicchitti still has that cue; I think it was on his work bench during my last lesson. He had another RB cue he was shooting with which was the first RB cue I'd ever seen in person :)

Here are two RB's with birdseye maple forearms. The "gunsight" cue was made in 1980 and the "bushka" was made in 2002. Mr. Black uses every type and figure of wood.
